Question Genealogy

RootsWeb's WorldConnect Project: all

Some LDS claim to trace their ancestry back to Adam which, of course, is not possible because there are no reliable records that go back that far. But I think people are willing to trace their ancestry based on conjecture.

If people are sealed to the wrong parents, does it matter?

It does matter. However, if there are mistakes made, they will be worked out.

Excited Genealogist Traces Family Line Back to Adam, Eve

Posted on 24 September 2008

...

Some members of the Bayshore Genealogical Society remain skeptical of Dagg’s research, which they say leans heavily on Jewish tradition and relies very little on official records from the more reliable Mormon genealogical database. Yet Florence is unmoved by the criticism, and remains convinced that she’s descended from Adam. “Look, I’ve been sinning my whole life and fallen short of the glory of God. Coincidence? I think not. It’s in the blood, baby.”

Interesting. Imagine being sealed to the wrong people and then having to get it all straightened out way, way, way down the road. Would that be in the Millennium when all the missing records come to light?

So is the LDS church doing the sealings all the way back to Adam or are they waiting to verify that genealogy?

One question that has not been addressed as far as I know is what to do about those innumerable hosts of people who were born, lived, and died and left absolutely no record of their existence other than a decaying skeleton. How does the LDS even know of their existence as individuals, much less perform proper ordinances for them? Does that mean that Heavenly Father failed to make the offer of the Celestial Kingdom to all people from all ages?

I would guess that is no worse that not being sealed to the right people. And at this point, I don't think a few hundred years would be considered way, way, way down the road. I rather think that it will pass fairly quickly for them.

I don't know anything about it. I do family history primarily because it is fun. However, the sealings that are getting done because of my research are only going back to about 1800 where I have a very good notion that I am correct in my research. There are some reliable sources that can take you back farther, but I haven't had too many of those in my own research.

I am pretty sure that I have addressed this, but for the people who read the threads and may not have been here for it previously:

We have not been given revelation on this topic, but it is thought that during the Millenium, there will be a much greater traffic in heavenly beings who will help the work along when it needs to be done. In other words, it is likely that the dead may return to fill in the blanks, or even the entire missing sheet, so that the work may be done.

After all, they are not lost or unkown to the Lord.

So, then do these dead not go to any of the three kingdoms, but end up resurrected back here on earth? Is there is final judgement once for all or is there a thousand year sorting-out period?

bbbbbbb, my understanding is that those who went to spirit prison must stay there at least until the work is done for them.

Only righteous people will live on the earth during the Millennium. They will be those who have lived virtuous and honest lives. These people will inherit either the terrestrial or celestial kingdom.

During the Millennium, mortals will still live on earth, and they will continue to have children as we do now (see D&C 45:58). Joseph Smith said that immortal beings will frequently visit the earth. These resurrected beings will help with the government and other work. (See Teachings of the Prophet Joseph Smith, p. 268.)

Brigham Young taught that there will be nonmembers of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints living on earth as well as members. People will still have their agency, and for a time many will continue to believe their false religions and ideas. Eventually everyone will accept Jesus Christ as the Savior. (See Daniel H. Ludlow, ed., Latter-day Prophets Speak, pp. 261-62.)

During the Millennium, Jesus will "reign personally upon the earth" (Articles of Faith 1:10). Joseph Smith explained that Jesus and the resurrected Saints will probably not live on the earth all the time but will visit whenever they please or when necessary to help in the governing of the earth (see Teachings of the Prophet Joseph Smith, p. 268).

What Will Be Done during the Millennium?
There will be two great works for members of the Church during the Millennium: temple work and missionary work. Temple work involves the ordinances that are necessary for exaltation. These include baptism, the laying on of hands for the gift of the Holy Ghost, and the temple ordinances--the endowment, temple marriage, and the sealing together of family units.

Many people have died without receiving these ordinances. People on the earth must perform these ordinances for them. This work is now being done in the temples of the Lord. There is too much work to finish before the Millennium begins, so it will be completed during that time. Resurrected beings will help us correct the mistakes we have made in doing research concerning our dead ancestors. They will also help us find the information we need to complete our records.

The other great work during the Millennium will be missionary work. The gospel will be taught with great power to all people. Eventually there will be no need to teach others the first principles of the gospel because "they shall all know me, from the least of them unto the greatest of them, saith the Lord" (Jeremiah 31:34).
Gospel Principles

Doctrine and Covenants 29
9 For the hour is nigh and the day soon at hand when the earth is ripe; and all the proud and they that do wickedly shall be as stubble; and I will burn them up, saith the Lord of Hosts, that wickedness shall not be upon the earth;
10 For the hour is nigh, and that which was spoken by mine apostles must be fulfilled; for as they spoke so shall it come to pass;
11 For I will reveal myself from heaven with power and great glory, with all the hosts thereof, and dwell in righteousness with men on earth a thousand years, and the wicked shall not stand.
12 And again, verily, verily, I say unto you, and it hath gone forth in a firm decree, by the will of the Father, that mine apostles, the Twelve which were with me in my ministry at Jerusalem, shall stand at my right hand at the day of my coming in a pillar of fire, being clothed with robes of righteousness, with crowns upon their heads, in glory even as I am, to judge the whole house of Israel, even as many as have loved me and kept my commandments, and none else.

Thanks, PhoebeAnn. That makes it quite clear. However, I am still left to wonder how temple ordinances can be performed for those masses of humanity for whom no record exists. Except by divine revelation I don't know how this can be done. If divine revelation is given, then one is left to wonder why all the effort is being made to do genealogical work now. It seems to me that Heavenly Father is rather dependent on LDS efforts to accomplish His will.
