As of now Hell is NOT the lake of fire. Hell is a place where unrepented sinners go to be tortured. Hell will become one with the lake at the end. But what I am getting at is the unbelievers part. As a former atheist, I didn't care one way or another about God, or about heaven or hell. I though when I die, it will be it. My family is Christian. And when I read Revelation 21:8, it was a wake up call. It was the night when I became a Christian (September 4, 2009) and I thought that if I would have died a day before, I would be in hell then the lake of fire. The lake of fire is the second and forever death. I am glad that police officer showed me my mistakes of atheism before it was too late. |

What Police officer? Originally Posted by Bryant the Believer Revelation 21:8 - The key word in that verse is "unbelievers". In context, that word refers to all persons who do not share the faith of the writer (John) who, prior to his becoming a disciple of Jesus, was a life-long follower of Judaism (the parent faith of Judeo-Christianity). John's writing is based upon promises made in the Hebrew scriptures and reflects the influences of Judaism, which John and the other disciples/Apostles carried over into the new movement called "Christianity". IOW, John had been a practicing Jew, who thought like a practicing Jew, and who wrote Revelation to a small audience that consisted of former Jews who were reluctant to relinquish the teachings of Judaism.
- In the mindset of both John and his audience, the word "unbelievers" points to all the other types of persons described in that verse.
- Christians spin "unbelievers" to refer to anyone who is not a Christian. But, to John, the word referred to anyone who did not think exactly as he thought.
