How do you verify that a person speaking tongues is speaking in a real language instead of a imagined language?
Has anyone ever seen someone speak in a real language they did not know while speaking in tongues?

24Therefore I tell you, whatever you ask for in prayer, believe that you have received it, and it will be yours. 25And when you stand praying, if you hold anything against anyone, forgive him, so that your Father in heaven may forgive you your sins."
I've spoken in tongues before, and had the same phrase repeating over and over. Later, I looked it up (it sounded Hebrew). It was a Hebrew prayer. I didn't know Hebrew at the time - I've learned a little since then. I've heard others speak in tongues, and be speaking Russian, French, and Hebrew. I've also heard a Ukrainian man who knew no English speak a message in tongues to my pastor, who knows no Russian. My pastor understood him perfectly. I didn't understand it, but the Spirit gave him the knowledge.
If someone is speaking in an unknown tongue, and there is no one there to interpret, most people who have received this gift can tell through discernment whether it's real or faked.
I've received an interpretation of tongues once before. It isn't a translation - there's no word-for-word meaning exchange. I was given one phrase. When I spoke that, more words came flowing out. Had I not spoken, the message would have been given to another, more obedient, person.
Always test what is said against the Bible. Nothing of the Spirit can contradict the Word.

This is one of the most controversial subjects in our christian community.
I do speak in tongues but I only do it in my prayer closet or in the privacy of my own home because most of the time it is in an unknown tongue. I believe that if it is God's will that I spent in my church or any church for that matter it will be for prophetic reasons and an interpretation will be manifest at the same time.
That my brother is the direction that the Word of God gives us concerning the speaking in tongues.
Now concerning your question. According to the Word of God in 1 Cor 14:6 Paul says that "Now, brethren, if I come unto you speaking with tongues, what shall I profit you, except I shall speak to you either by revelation, or by knowledge, or by prophesying or by doctrine?
When someone speaks in tongues in the church and it is through the Holy Spirit the word of God states above that it will be for those reasons. When the tongues go forth and are complete no other functions of the church should go forward until an interpretation is given esle the church is out of order. That is the order that Paul talks about in the book of Corinthians.
Everytime that I have heard someone speak in tongues it was I call a prophetic language that I had never heard before but with it was given an interpretation.
In church settings today you will hear more than one person speaking in tongues and most of the time it is an unknown tongue which the bible explains to us is for self edification. We do not know what's being said because the tongues is the groanings of the Holy Spirit mentioned in Romans 8:26 "Likewise the Spirit also helpeth our infirmities: for we know not what we should pray for as we ought: but the Spirit itself maketh intercession for us with groanings which cannot be uttered." This is where I am in disagreement because I believe that we are to do this in the privacy of our own home in when we are alone. The reason that I believe this is that it does not edify the church and when we come together it is for that reason only.
On several occasions I have heard myself speak in an oriental language and hebrew and don't know the interpretation to either one.
24Therefore I tell you, whatever you ask for in prayer, believe that you have received it, and it will be yours. 25And when you stand praying, if you hold anything against anyone, forgive him, so that your Father in heaven may forgive you your sins."

I just went to my second Assemblies of God church I have ever been too. My first one being the church my parents brought me too untill around when I was seven.
I had a great time. Other than people praying with others up front during the songs I did not see anything too wierd LoL. Overall I had a great time today. The sermon was really moving and the people very nice.

Prayer in tongues... It's an interesting topic to be sure, and one that I do believe in. I myself have never spoken in tongues, (I would assume I would remember or someone would tell me lol) but several times I have seen and heard it.

Rest assured. If it had happened, there would be no mistake. When I received this gift, I had never even heard anyone speak in tongues, but there was no doubt.
