The Holy Spirit works through the water. Baptism has nothing to do with water alone, it has to do with the work of the Holy Spirit through that water. When John baptized, he was using only water. That is why we find a difference in the scriptures between the early and later baptisms.
People will say that baptism is just a profession of faith. However, the baptism of Jesus was a great event. When he was baptized, scripture says, "And straightway coming up out of the water, he saw the heavens opened, and the Spirit like a dove descending upon him" (Mark 1:10)
Regardless of what you believe, being a Christian is not just about you and God. It is about being part of the Body of Christ, which includes all believers. The public celebration of baptism recognizes that fact.
