There have been several cases in the counties surrounding us and a few here in town, and all have been mild symptoms. Doctor visit, Tamiflu, Tylenol/Motrin, lots of fluids and rest....are the treatments.

From what I've gathered and seen it's not that it's a more deadly virus, but it's just a different one that the younger generaton does not have an immunity to. I'm sure the classic flu was this much of a scare when it was new.

Be proactive in watching for signs of flu symptoms and get treatment early. What has been seen with the H1N1 here is the onset of a bad headache, scratchy throat, and high fever. Tamiflu is the front line treatment med but it does not cure. It just makes the symptoms less severe and the illness shorter in length.

The important thing with Flu, of any kind, is to keep yourself hydrated and watch for a developing respiratory infection which can be secondary and the real cause for the more severe cases.

See a doctor:

first onset of symptoms, Tamiflu works better if started early

If you get better, then worse

Peeing less

Ongoing fever (you can alterate Tylenol with Motrin *KEY*--> Dose out according to the weight, not the age.)

Breathing or feeling "tight" in breaths

Productive cough (Loogees! sp! yellowish/greenish)

Extreme fatigue that isn't getting better. This is important with the kiddos. Their body mass is much less so it doesnt take much other than a fever for them to get dehydrated. If they are laying around energyless/sleeping alot, get them in pronto.

As for getting the vaccine, Im not going to and I'm not going to give it my kids. We have recieved the regular flu shot, as we have the past few years because I work around it. So, the risk of taking it home is more.

What I've literally been preaching to my kids is to cough into their elbow and dont touch their face unless their hands are washed. (You can contract stuff through your eyes, nose, and mouth. The mucous membranes are just as easily to pass something on as is breathing it in. It wont prevent it completely, but it definately helps.

I'm not one to say you should take something or not. It's up to you. Do what you feel at peace with. Good luck.

And of course, see your physician about all of this. This is just my input, not absolute word.

NORWAY:

Swine Flu: Mass vaccination adviced

As expected, the Norwegian Health authorities on Friday announced that they advice all Norwegians to be vaccinated against the swine flu. So far, ten persons are known to have died from the flu in Norway.

It is reported that 2000 now are confirmed to have the flu, but many more are sick with flu syptoms and in many schools and kindergartens 50 per cent of the children are absent.

SWEDEN:

Swine flu cases at record high

Cases of swine flu reached record levels last week with 198 new cases in comparison to 93 the previous week. The Swedish Institute for Infectious Disease Control (Smittskyddsinstitutet) has now warned of serious affections among 15-40-year-olds.

To date 1,778 cases of the new A(H1H1) virus have been recorded since the outbreak began.

Sweden launched a mass vaccination programme in a bid to control the flu pandemic on October 12th. Several of the new cases are connected to the vaccine.

Five cases of allergic reactions have been reported by patients after having been given the vaccine. The patients required hospital care although symptoms were eased after treatment.

Around 200 reports of people suffering side effects after receiving the vaccine have so far been reported to the Swedish Medical Products Agency (Läkemedelsverket).

The most common complaints are pains in arm in the vicinity of the injection, as well as muscle and joint pain.

Other complaints include a general feeling of illness and mild influenza symptoms.

Those suffering allergic reactions have complained of dizziness, rashes, itching and pain in the chest.

Of the around 200 cases, 100 have come from personnel employed within healthcare, one of the prioritized groups, and the rest from the general public.

My dad is currently in the hospital with bilateral pneumonia. His lungs are both opaque on the x-ray and he is on full time oxygen. This is a man in perfectly good health (just got a congressional level health screening about a year ago) who eats right and works out.

I can't stress how real this is to people. It drives me up the walls when people act as if because this happened under Obama he must be behind it or have something to do with it.

If you are fortunate enough to have the opportunity for your kids to get H1N1 vaccine, grab it!

He is feeling better but his lungs are both still pretty bad, they are talking about maybe letting him go home later this week depending on the cultures.
