The city of Rovaniemi, in Lapland, already has up to a thousand cases of swine flu, according to the Lapland Central Hospital. Meanwhile vaccination campaigns have already begun in hospitals in Seinäjoki and the province of Satakunta.
Elsewhere in Lapland, suspected cases at hospitals and barracks are on the rise but still haven't reached epidemic proportions.

An epidemic of the H1N1 swine flu virus has been declared at an army garrison in Tammisaari in southern Finland.
A total of nine cases of the virus have been confirmed and a further thirty conscripts are believed to have also contracted the disease. Leave has been cancelled for over 700 conscripts.
Two confirmed cases of the H1N1 virus have been reported at a Frontier Guard garrison at Imatra in eastern Finland with a further 21 suspected cases.
Some 30 new cases of the H1N1 virus have been confirmed in Lapland during the past week.
Meanwhile, a travel ban instituted on the Sodankylä Brigade was cancelled on Monday. Between 40 and 50 people at the brigade are thought to have caught swine flu so far.

Kids brought home permission slips for me to sign if we wanted them to get the H1N1 vaccine for free. I signed them - now I hope they don't catch it before the shot is given and takes effect.

My dad is in the hospital right now with pneumonia in both lungs and they told me I can't go see him because they are FULL of H1N1 cases. He went to the ER at about noon and they did not get him into a hospital room till 1 am. His ENTIRE floor is totally full, mostly pneumonia and flu cases.

Sorry about your dad I will say a prayer for you and your family. I know one hospital here is limiting visitors to "healthy" and over age 18 only. I don't know as so much of this is starting to not look good.

There are indications that the swine flu vaccines that will soon start being administered in Finland tend to cause more side-effects than the ordinary seasonal flu shots.
The vaccine causes aches and swelling at the point of injection for many. In addition, the vaccine can also cause a light fever.
The reason for the side effects is in the effective ingredient, which is stronger than in ordinary flu vaccines.
In the north of Sweden, health care personnel began receiving swine flu vaccines this week. Most of those who got the shot experienced mild symptoms. 80 per cent of those vaccinated suffered symptoms typical of the swine flu, such as fever, headache, muscle pains, and a sore throat.
The symptoms emerged about five hours from receiving the injection. With some people the symptoms were so severe that they stayed at home.
Dozens of people in Finnish Lapland have come down with swine flu in the past couple of weeks. Only a few of the cases are serious, and one patient remains in intensive care in Rovaniemi.
“There are so many confirmed cases that we can now talk about an epidemic”, says Markku Broas, head physician of the unit of infectious diseases at the Lapland Central Hospital in Rovaniemi.
