| I think the article in the OP is a sensational piece for the media to latch onto. The concept of "bara" as not-meaning "ex nihilo" is nothing new. I think the concept has more to do with fashioning or shaping. I do understand how she gets seperating from the immediate context though. the downside to one of her points is that in places like Isaiah 45:7 "bara" is used with just one object instead of two. But Gen 1:1 seems more as a title to me that forms an inclusio with Gen 2:3. The whole idea that is being communicated seems to be that THIS is how God fashioned the heavens and the earth and assigned appropriate function to everything in the heavens and earth (or something along those lines).
