I know staff does not have time but for a quick judgement on the report, does it sound right or does the reporter just trying to cause trouble. Then find a ruling to apply to case. What I have found is the underlying theology of the mods affecting their judgment. I know it is hard for them not to, but it does permeate the heavy leanings in one direction or another and the unfairness to those who do not believe as they do.
May I make a suggestion. Keep theology out of the rules but have the mods monitor for misbehavior, bad attitudes, indecent comments, off topis, and poor language. Theology should be specific to each section, and moved to appropriate areas.
Common decency, polite conversation, staying on topic, should not be given warnings, because they were not palatable to someone else.

Did you mod in Theology with me? I vaguely recall that, but I could be wrong.
Vis, I've seen what you're talking about, although I have to say it rarely comes up in society. And again, it's why we work with a consensus and why I go through the reports fairly regularly to make sure it's not creeping in.
A rule violation is a rule violation, regardless of who is committing the offense. There isn't a "well, this guy is Lutheran so we're going to give him a staff contact but this other guy is an atheist so we're not going to give him a staff action." I think sometimes there might be comments about one's theology, but rarely does a mod's theology come into play.
There have been times during my modship where I've said that I essentially agree with what a reported poster is saying but that the way he is saying it was way off base. That's probably about as close as it comes.
This is from the Society standpoint. YMMV in other forums, although I'm betting it's much rarer these days than in days of yore.
By the by, I wanted to thank everyone so far for a good conversation. I'm really getting some good feedback and putting that to use as I'm dealing with the day to day stuff here on CF. I'm keeping closer watch on the reports and I'm watching more forums and trying to put lids on problems as quickly as possible. So please, keep the feedback coming.

A while back, I reported a liberal poster in American politics, and I also reported a conservative Chaplain for the exact same violation. The post from the liberal member was edited, and the post from the conservative Chaplain was left intact.
Is this an indication of moderator bias against liberal posters or a bias in fovor of staff?

It is the nature of people to overlook or explain away marginal things done by members of their own group. Thus, I would tend toward the latter explanation.
Groups tend to police themselves in order to preserve the group.
