Our God is An Awesome God!!
When the bodies of people die, their souls remain conscious and go either into heaven to be with Jesus (Philippians 1:21,23, 2 Corinthians 5:8, Revelation 6:9-11) or into Hades to be tormented by flame (Luke 16:23-24). At the second coming of Jesus, he will bring with him from heaven all of the souls of the dead in heaven (1 Thessalonians 4:14) and they will descend to the earth where the graves of their bodies are and their bodies will be resurrected into immortality at that time (1 Thessalonians 4:16, 1 Corinthians 15:21-23,52-53, Revelation 20:4-6). After the subseqiuent millennium and Gog/Magog event (Revelation 20:7-10), all of the souls in Hades will be resurrected into bodies and cast into the lake of fire (Revelation 20:12-15), which is the second death (Revelation 21:8). So the people in the lake of fire will not be immortal, for they will be in the state of the second death. And yet the people in the lake of fire, though dead, will still be conscious and will suffer torment forever along with the devil and his angels (Revelation 20:10,15, 14:10-11, Matthew 25:41,46, Mark 9:45-46, Isaiah 66:24).
Jo. 3:16 and Ro. 6:23 plainly state that eternal life is a gift from God and if He does not give us eternal life we will die or perish. In Deut. 30:19 God says He sets life and death before us and then He admonishes us to choose life.
Gen. 2:7 And the LORD God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his or nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living being. (NKJV) Notice man became a living soul or being, he is one he does not have one. Much of the misunderstanding comes from not knowing what the word translated soul really means. The word is translated from the Hebrew, Nephesh: “Strong’s #5315: properly a breathing creature.” This word is first used to refer to animals in Gen. 1:21,24. Other examples can be found in Gen. 2:19, 9:10,12,15,16 these are all translated creature. So now that we understand what a soul is and what it is not we can begin to understand Ezk.18:4 “ Behold, all souls are Mine; The soul of the father As well as the soul of the son is Mine; The soul who sins shall die. And again in verse 20 The soul who sins shall die. God told the truth, like He always does, when He said in Gen. 2:17 that Adam would die.
[“but of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil you shall not eat, for in the day that you eat of it you shall surely die.”]
Satan, in Gen. 3:4, lied like he always does, when he said they would not die; [“Then the serpent said to the woman, “You will not surely die”] Who are you going to believe? Again God says in Gen. 3:19 “In the sweat of your face you shall eat bread Till you return to the ground, For out of it you were taken; For you are dust, And to dust you shall return.” Note there is no indication that we, or a part of us, goes any where else. Ecc. 3:19-20 For what happens to the sons of men also happens to animals; one thing befalls them both: as one dies, so dies the other. Surely, they all have one breath; man has no advantage over animals, for all is vanity. 20 All go to one place: all are from the dust, and all return to dust. While we’re in Ecc. let’s read Ecc. 9:4,5 But for him who is joined to all the living there is hope, for a living dog is better than a dead lion.
5 For the living know that they will die; But the dead know nothing, And they have no more reward, For the memory of them is forgotten. And again in chapter 9 verse10 Whatever your hand finds to do, do it with your might; for there is no work or device or knowledge or wisdom in the grave where you are going. Two things here are plainly stated, 1. the grave is where we are going and 2. nothing will be going on there. There simply is no consciousness after death until the resurrection. In Job 14:14 God inspires Job to ask “If a man dies, shall he live again? All the days of my hard service I will wait, Till my change comes.” Then God inspires the answer in verse 15 “You shall call, and I will answer You; You shall desire the work of Your hands.” We simply do not have an immortal soul. 1 Cor. 15:50 Now this I say, brethren, that flesh and blood cannot inherit the kingdom of God; nor does corruption inherit incorruption. 51 Behold, I tell you a mystery: We shall not all sleep, but we shall all be changed— 52 in a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trumpet. For the trumpet will sound, and the dead will be raised incorruptible, and we shall be changed. 53 For this corruptible must put on incorruption, and this mortal must put on immortality. 54 So when this corruptible has put on incorruption, and this mortal has put on immortality, then shall be brought to pass the saying that is written: “Death is swallowed up in victory.” 55 “ODeath, whereisyour sting?O Hades,(or grave) whereisyour victory?”
The punishment of the incorrigibly wicked is eternal death (that is, to never live again) not eternal life being tortured. That is eternal punishment, not eternal punishing!
Examples of what happens to the incorrigibly wicked can be read in many places in the Bible.
Ro.6:23 and Jo.3:16 say much the same thing.
Ro.6:23 For the wages of sin is death, BUT the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.
Jo.3:16 For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish BUT have everlasting life. Notice that DEATH or PERISHING is spoken of in contrast to eternal LIFE! Death or perishing is not speaking about life some where else doing something else. Notice also that eternal life is God’s gift. It is not something that we are born with! If God does not give us eternal life we can not get it for ourselves.
Before we read Ezk.18:4,20 we need to go back to Genesis. A misunderstanding of the word “soul” is at the crux of much of this misunderstanding. The word translated soul in Gen.2:7 is “Nephesh” (neh’-fesh) the word means a living creature, not something in us, that has its own life apart from us. The first time the word is used in the Bible is Gen.1:21 and is speaking about whales and other animals. This word is continually used to refer to animals of every kind. A few examples can be found in Gen.1:21,24 2:19, 9:10 and on and on. When it is used in Gen.2:7, man becomes a (nephesh) a living creature or a living soul. Man is not given a “nephesh,” he is one.
So now that we understand what a soul is and what it is not we can begin to understand Ezk.18:4 “ Behold, all souls are Mine; The soul of the father As well as the soul of the son is Mine; The soul who sins shall die. And again in verse 20 The soul WHO sins shall die. The son shall not bear the guilt of the father, nor the father bear the guilt of the son. The righteousness of the righteous shall be upon himself, and the wickedness of the wicked shall be upon himself.
Malachi 4 speaks to the time when the wicked shall be destroyed.
1“For behold, the day is coming, Burning like an oven, And all the proud, yes, all who do wickedly will be stubble. And the day which is coming shall burn them up,” “That will leave them neither root nor branch. [That is total annihilation] Now read verse 3.
“You shall trample the wicked, For they shall be ashes under the soles of your feet
On the day that I do this,” Says the LORD of hosts.
Jesus speaks of this event in Mat.25:32-33,41 32 All the nations will be gathered before Him, and He will separate them one from another, as a shepherd divides his sheep from the goats. 33 And He will set the sheep on His right hand, but the goats on the left. Verse 41 “Then He will also say to those on the left hand, ‘Depart from Me, you cursed, into the everlasting fire ...We just read what happens when these wicked souls end up in this fire Mal.4
In Revelation 20:6 we read that “Blessed and holy are those who share in the first resurrection. For them the second death holds no power... So the second death does have power over some. That second death is forever, eternal, ETERNAL DEATH, eternal punish-MENT; NOT eternal punish-ING.
There is only one being that would perpetuate the lie that God would torment people forever for one short life time of sin. That may be the way Satan would do things if he was in charge, but thank God Satan is not in charge, God is. Eternal punishing is Satan’s fate and he would like us to think it is our fate too.
There you go PastorBruce, nothing but the truth.

What's the debate? That man has or does not have an immortal soul?

I believe in God the Father Almighty,
Maker of heaven and earth:
And in Jesus Christ his only Son our Lord,
Who was conceived by the Holy Ghost,
Born of the Virgin Mary,
Suffered under Pontius Pilate,
Was crucified, dead, and buried:
He descended into hell;
The third day he rose again from the dead;
He ascended into heaven,
And sitteth on the right hand of God the Father Almighty;
From thence he shall come to judge the quick and the dead.
I believe in the Holy Ghost;
The holy catholic Church;
The Communion of Saints;
The Forgiveness of sins;
The Resurrection of the body,
And the Life everlasting.
Amen.
Man ends up in eternity heaven or hell. His soul is eternal.
Matthew 25:32, 45-46 All the nations will be gathered before him..."He will reply, 'I tell you the truth, whatever you did not do for one of the least of these, you did not do for me.' "Then they will go away to eternal punishment, but the righteous to eternal life."
I am guessing, Thomas, that you believe in soul obliteration? Interpreting the words "soul will die" as meaning the soul is obliterated from existence (rather than the spiritual death of hell)? You had a lot of text there.
Every time men try to reform something of God's they always mess it up.
I'm going with Jude on this one.
Jude 3 Beloved, while I was very diligent to write to you concerning our common salvation, I found it necessary to write to you exhorting you to contend earnestly for the faith which was once for all delivered to the saints.
I'm going to stick with the faith once delivered.
If you want to see reform in action read MrPolo's posts and you will see the sad result every time people try it.
