Sure, I know what you're thinking. Didn't you check out the previews/trailers, rating, content first? Well, I thought I did. I mean, I saw the previews on t.v. and it looked like a fun little comedy and we tend to like Ricky Gervais in other things we've seen him in, especially The Office. However, what we weren't counting on was for the trailers we saw to leave out the overarching theme of the entire flick- which is a message of very blatant atheistic anti-Christian propaganda- if you were wondering or in any doubt.
Yeah, I'm not saying there weren't funny parts, because there were. Many things were quite clever too. Yet, I walked out of that theater decidedly heavy of heart. They knew what they were doing, not putting that part right out there for public consumption, so they'd be drawn in, buy their tickets, their concessions, and sit down to what they thought was going to be a light-hearted flick. Only, it wasn't funny at all and it wasn't even subtle. I would not have even wasted my money had I known.
But, I can tell other people not to go see The Invention of Lying. And isn't that just the greatest? I bet they even knew that other people telling other people not to see it would only make some people want to see it all the more. Start a little controversy of sorts and make more money while they're at it. Brilliant.

It sounds like it is deliberately misleading.

After spending most of the time with my head down and my eyes shut during two movies as a young adult, I finally got the courage to stand up and walk out whenever I found a movie to be offensive. Now I rarely go unless the priest himself has recommended a movie. Such was the case with My Big Fat Greek Wedding and Liar, Liar.

Not surprising is it?

I'm usually much better at determining movies that I would think twice before seeing. I still remember... it was 1994, I was 18, and I was always a Beatles fan. The guy I was dating at the time and my little sister were both with me. We decided to go see Backbeat. It was rated R and they made more to do than usual about carding us to see if we were old enough. I thought it strange, but we went in anyway. I can't remember how long we soldiered through some of it- but when we all felt uncomfortable enough- we kind of looked at each other and bolted. It was under-rated, quite literally. They refused to give us a refund. I remember asking.
The other movie I absolutely should have walked out on was Twilight. It was painful to sit through, very boring, and sparkly vampires? Were they serious?
The movie tonight though. It just made me sad for people.

| | | The Invention of Lying is a 2009 comedy film, written and directed by Ricky Gervais and Matthew Robinson. The film was originally being produced under the title This Side of the Truth, but Gervais announced on his blog in April 2009 that the title had indeed been changed, reversing a previous assertion he had made to the contrary several weeks earlier. The film was released in the United States on October 2, 2009.
The film is set in an alternate reality in which no one has ever lied. It stars Gervais as a writer who tells the world's first lie and learns to wield its power for personal gain.
The cast consists of...
* Ricky Gervais as Mark Bellison
* Jennifer Garner as Anna
* Rob Lowe as Rob
* Louis C.K. as Greg
* Jonah Hill as Frank
* Christopher Guest as Nathan Goldfrappe
* Tina Fey as Shelley
* Roz Ryan as Nurse Barbara
* Jeffrey Tambor as Anthony
* John Hodgman as Priest
* Jimmi Simpson as Bob
* Fionnula Flanagan as Martha
* Stephanie March as Woman on the Street
* Jason Bateman as Doctor (cameo)
* Stephen Merchant as Home Owner (cameo)
* Philip Seymour Hoffman as Bartender
* Edward Norton as Traffic Cop
* Martin Starr as Waiter
The film was financed by Media Rights Capital and Radar Pictures. Filming took place in Lowell, Massachusetts in April 2008 (it also had location shoots in Quincy, Massachusetts, Andover and North Andover, Massachusetts, and Boston, Massachusetts). The film completed principal photography in early June 2008.
Warner Bros. owns the rights for the film's North American distribution, while Universal Pictures owns the rights to release the film outside of North America. The film was released in North America on October 2, 2009. Its world premiere occurred two weeks earlier at the Toronto International Film Festival on September 14, 2009.
The film currently holds a 58% 'Rotten' Rating on Rotten Tomatoes, based on 72 reviews, and a score of 58/100 based upon 22 reviews on Metacritic. Roger Ebert of the Chicago Sun-Times awarded the film three and a half stars out of four saying "in its amiable, quiet, PG-13 way, [it] is a remarkably radical comedy" while Empire gave the film 1 star out of 5 saying the "ramshackle plot detours into a hideously ill-conceived religious satire".

In a world where no-one can lie, this guy gets what he wants, and gets women to sleep with him by inventing lying... The preview was enough to turn my stomach. But thank you for letting us know how bad it really is.

"No matter how "right" you may be on various points, you must be diplomatic also. The first and important thing is not "rightness" at all, but Christian love and harmony. Most "crazy converts" have been "right" in the criticisms that led to their downfall; but they were lacking in Christian love and charity and so went off the deep end, needlessly alienating people around them and finally finding themselves all alone in their rightness and self-righteousness. Don't you follow them!..."

"Personal opinions have no role in ministry of any kind. When we represent the Church, then we ought only say and do what the Church has asked us to do. All else is wasted energy and an opportunity for sin. It is when we lapse into personal opinions, even when we dress them in the language of the Church, that conflict will arise."

Yes, thanks for your warning.
I will warn others not to see it.

Well, actually, he could have, but he didn't. That part didn't occur in the movie, surprisingly.
