Me and my friend got into a conversation the other night about lust. He stated that lust is anything regarding the desire for sex. For example, when you longingly look at a woman, mentally undress her, or masturbate, you are lusting for her.
However, I thought that the literal definition of lust; the intense desire for, was too broad to specifically describe certain sins. For example, what if you had a intense desire to eat a sandwich, or meet someone?
My reasoning is, if you were to never even check a girl out, how would you ever get married?
The ladder is more accurate. Even in the Bible it says that someone who lusts to be a bishop, lusts for a good thing. At least I think it's in the Bible... either that or the writings of a Saint.

What do you think?
Exactly. Lust, if you look at the Greek, is the same as coveting- desiring something that isn't yours AND intending to take it.

So by that sense, if you look at a girl, but have no desire to 'take' her, you are not lusting?
Uh... figuratively speaking, yes.

The latter is the more correct definition. Lust is not exclusive to just sexual desires. The Bible also speaks of the lust for money being the root of all evil. Lust is beyond a normal desire, it's something that can consume you and distract you from more important things of life.

2. An overwhelming desire or craving: a lust for power.
Intense eagerness or enthusiasm: a lust for life.
Then my intense desire for sea food right now is wrong.
