"Rescued you?" Manfred asked, cracking a most amused grin at the thought. "What, were they on fire? Were you being put to work? Perish the thought, but had the kitchen hands mistakenly tried to cook you?" Ah, but it was good to have time to stand about and joke with his comrades. No chain of command, no protocol, no marching, and no constant threats of discovery or attack. This was an existence he could get used to, for a time at least.
He would have asked Scarlet whether she didn't read or simply couldn't, but he knew full well how few people in these lands actually knew how. He had been lucky to have made it into the paladin order, for that's the only way he would have learned, unless he reached a post as high as his father's. Even then, his father wasn't the most literate man in the world, and while his reading was better than his father's, Manfred could still barely write legibly.
