US census worker hanging probed

BBC NEWS | Americas | US census worker hanging probed

US police are investigating the death of a man who was found hanged from a tree in rural Kentucky with the word "Fed" scrawled on his chest. Bill Sparkman, 51, had been going door-to-door in Clay County collecting census data.

Unintended consequence of the rightwing hysteria in the US that this board sometimes evidences or something less tragic?

Certainly looks grim I hope there is a less horrible explanation than US citizens lynching people they see as government employees.
What do others think, is it down to turn it down a notch or two on the right or is this guy, depending on the outcome of the investigation, collateral damage in a worthy fight.

A worthy fight? Who is opposed to the census?

Someone is it seems.

I'm sorry about that I should have put worthy fight in inverted commas viz "worthy fight".

I don't personally think there is a worthy fight to be faught here.

I should also point out that I don't want to discuss this case per se, that is being done on the News board.

I want to discuss that influence that the febrile state of current US politics had on this case or if it indeed had any.

But at the moment we have to assume that this man was lynched for being a census official, that appears to be the stance that the police and FBI are taking.

It might be better if they were wrong in some ways.

But if you go around stirring up anti-government feeling and call into question the very legitimacy of the government isn't this an (il)logical next step, to attack the government?

It has happened before when the Democratic Party has been in power hasn't it?

This is just the beginning of the train wreck that's been slowly but surely building up for a good forty years now.

When I tell people there probably won't be a United States of America in twenty years, they look at me like I'm mad. "It can't happen here" are famous last words.

Speaking of hysteria, how about you turn it down a notch or two?

Would you care to highlight a an area of my post that you find hysterical? I thought I was posting a fact, a man was lynched with FED scrawled on his chest, and was asking for comments as to how the present US political frenzy affected this.

You surely don't deny this man was murdered, nor, I doubt could you deny that the political zeitgeist in the US is febrile at the moment, that being the case where is my hysteria?

I am baffled by your comment and can only assume you had nothing intelligent to add but felt you had to add something for some reason that isn't obvious.

So to repeat the talking point; to what extent has the current wave of anti-government hysteria fanned by the right lead to a situation where a census worker can be lynched?

Perhaps you see no link between the two things at all, in which case a reasoned argument why would be appreciated.

I personally found it hilarious that they found a federal employee hung from a tree with the word FED scrawled on him, and they suspect foul play may be involved. No, really? Please, mr. Detective, please tell me what clue gave you that idea.

If I were to murder someone for personal reasons, if I could make it look like a political lynching, that'd give me a good head start on the authorities.

Not saying that's what happened, maybe this really is a return to the days of lynching "revenooers", but I wouldn't proclaim it the begining of the end of the federal government just yet.

Police: Suicide not ruled out in death of Census worker found hanged
His body was allegedly found with the word “fed” scrawled across the chest, which was all the evidence the nutroots needed to conclude that the right’s long, long-awaited murderous rampage had finally begun. Minor details after the fact: (a) Cops haven’t ruled out suicide, (b) they won’t confirm the “fed” bit, and (c) there were unspecified “errors” in the original AP story.

Why would someone scrawl FED on their chest before killing themselves? The police haven't ruled out lots of things I'd imagine, but the fact that the FBI are involved should lead little argument about where the main track of their investigation is leading.

It seems a rather extreme length to go to get the "nutroots" ( ?!? ) on the right in the frame.

This man could turn out to be a suicidal leftwinger out to fit up the US right wing but that seems a bit far fetched so lets just concentrate on the most likely outcome - murder by an anti-government fanatic - and discuss how recent US political upheavels have driven that or if they have.

As I said before didn't something similar happen - murderous anti-government attacks by US citizens - last time the Democratic Party was in power? Is there any evidence to show that similar things happen when the Republican Party is in power, or do the nuts roost when that happens, if you'll pardon the mixed metaphor.
