You've missed out NRSV, which is a hugely popular version in mainline protestant and catholic circles.

Reps: 12,841,116,364,811 (power: 12,841,116,365) | | | It's amazing to me that the ESV has become so popular. I remember ordering it when it first came out, and how happy I was with it. It's really quite a balanced translation -- balanced between accessibility and accuracy, I mean.
Or maybe it's just the name. "OOoooh, the STANDARD for English! I've gotta get that one! (And who is King James, anyway?)"
If the JPS had been up there, I would have picked that, although naturally it excludes the NT. But I've never found a really good NT translation.

I like the literary quality of the language in the ESV. I suspect its quite traditional sound helps make it popular.
I also like the tendency to translate the same word or phrase the same way in different places. At some points that may be at the cost of accuracy, but it helps make the connections between different texts that are there in the original languages but get lost in (say) the NRSV which translates each passage independently.
It may be my imagination, or maybe Packer's influence, but it also comes across to me as less American (as opposed to British) in its English usage than most other mainstream translations.
The two reasons I like the New Jerusalem are the literary quality and the British English usage.
