Creation & EvolutionForum for the discussion of this important topic. This forum is open to non-believers. There is a Christians-only forum in the Christians-only section too.
Why would you doubt that? Given that over 100 million Bibles are sold annually?
On another note, here's my problem with atheism (and remember, I used to be one.)
Who is less accepting of other people’s belief systems?
a) Atheists
b) The Taliban
c) Fundamentalist Christians
I’d probably answer the Taliban, they have it over the rest with those quirky bombings and beheadings of theirs. However, were the question, who’s snider and least intelligible ? That’s hands down atheists. I was open to atheism and trying embracing it. However, I was unable to find a positive example of who atheists are, and what they believe. Every atheist I’ve encountered tells me, “We all have our own beliefs”, and this seems to be pretty true, but it’s also true of religious people and most believers seem to be able to identify themselves with some form of organization. Atheists can’t seem to agree on who they are, but there is one thing they can all agree on.
Religion is stupid, and so is anyone who believes in it.
Proponents of the new atheism are not happy to be “free of the bonds of religion”, they have a prostelyzing process which I can’t quite understand. It seems to be best summed up with the following statement:
“If you’re smart you realize there is no God. If you can’t see how obvious that is and how full of baloney everyone who proclaims to be religious is you’re a backward idiot.” (I suppose Francis Collins is dummy, too, right?)
Is it just me? Am I the only one encountering this?
I thought the new atheism was supposed to tell us how wonderful science and secular humanism were, not bash religion. Religious people do that enough!
Where are the discourses on Jung? When will we here about someone besides Darwin and Nietzsche? Where is the great humanist movement? Where are the atheists shouting, “Out of the blogosphere and into the streets, out of the blogosphere and into the streets!” Where is the enlightenment?
Religion is dumb, okay we’ve got it. So what do you have to say, what’s so great about just being a person without the supernatural and without defaming someone else’s beliefs? What makes your idea so great?
Religions are causing people to kill each other, and you want to do what to convince me that you have a better way?
What is it?
What’s your way?
How are you going to solve the problems of pain, loneliness, suffering, longing and emptiness?
Are you going to give me more stuff, are you going to teach me something new, are you going to do something besides tell me how stupid religion is?
I’m waiting, the whole world is waiting, say something.
Stop [wash my mouth][wash my mouth][wash my mouth][wash my mouth][wash my mouth]ing about being a discriminated against minority, step up to the plate and make a positive statement.
I don’t care what you think is wrong with the world, I want to know how your going to make it right.

Funny, my brother's a pretty solid Atheist, and he doesn't believe this... neither do any of his atheist friends: They all have a pretty decent understanding of religion, and a respect for those who believe (including me), but simply think it's not for them.
I guess you don't know all Atheists after all.

No, there are a few "Fundie Atheists" out there who talk like that, but don't think our faith doesn't have more than its share of people who fit the stereotype, or toss it right back at anyone who doesn't believe as they do.
I thought the new atheism was supposed to tell us how wonderful science and secular humanism were, not bash religion. Religious people do that enough!
True... I find the most zealous and obnoxious opposition to my beliefs comes not from Atheists, but from Christians who seem to think I'm not Christian enough.
I don’t care what you think is wrong with the world, I want to know how your going to make it right.
Have you met anyone of any faith who's got an answer to this? I certainly haven't... not around here, anyway.

For someone who used to be am atheist, you seem to have a really poor grasp on what an atheist is. Might want to work on that.

Courage is the price that life exacts for granting peace. The soul that knows it not, knows no release from little things; Knows not the livid loneliness of fear, nor mountain hights where bitter joy can hear the sound of wings. How can life grant us boon of living, compensate for dull gray ugliness and pregnant hate unless we dare the soul's dominion? Each time we make a choice, we pay with courage to behold restless day, and count it fair.

Religion is stupid, and so is anyone who believes in it.
I wouldn’t say religion is stupid, but it contains a lot of nonsense. Religions are filled with ideas that are absurd or contrary to good sense. As with the general population, some religious believers are stupid and others are not, but the one thing you can say about religious believers is that they are credulous. Religious believers are ready to believe especially on slight or uncertain evidence.
Religions are causing people to kill each other, and you want to do what to convince me that you have a better way?
What is it?
What’s your way?
Well, wouldn’t a better way be for people not to kill each other over differences in religion? The problem with religions is that their teachings are filled with examples of intolerance, cruelty and violence. Without religion there would be one less thing causing people to kill each other, but it would be naïve to think that we can ever rid ourselves of this scourge because some religious beliefs are just too emotionally comforting for most people to relinquish. I asked in another thread how we could reduce the harm caused by religion, but most of the responses from religious believers simply denied that religion caused any harm at all. Until religious believers learn to recognize and accept that religions cause harm, I don’t know what else we can do to solve this problem. One way they could learn to do that is by applying critical thinking to their religious beliefs.
How are you going to solve the problems of pain, loneliness, suffering, longing and emptiness?
You certainly dispel any doubt that religious believers are insecure and emotionally needy.
Are you going to give me more stuff, are you going to teach me something new, are you going to do something besides tell me how stupid religion is?

Actually, there are a few prominent atheists at the moment who are saying something. Perhaps you should read the recent books from Dawkins, Hitchens, Harris and Dennett.

Okay. If you learn critical thinking and apply it to your religious beliefs then you will probably find that your insecurity will be reduced and you will feel more positive about your life.
