Does anyone know what kind-of worship the Church of Christ has? I know some don't use instruments...
I'm praying about trying one this Sunday. I never even considered them before until I saw this folder. I never knew about the restoration movement. But I have been praying about finding another church because I am not a Southern Baptist, either, no matter how much I tried
They, also have alot of wonderful things about them and they love the Lord, dearly... but...sigh...
Whoops...so sorry. I just saw the ask questions folder.
Well, welcome!!
If you want to know a little more about the Restoration Movement there's a thread above that will answer most general questions.
In general, we're very bible-oriented and generally very bible literate as well (can't speak for all, but wherever I've visited this has been my experience, which is quite refreshing).
"Restoration Movement" is a bit misleading for some - not that big on labels or names, but basically the intent is to "restore New Testament Christianity" - to speak where the bible speaks, and be silent where it is silent. We don't really follow creeds per se, and each congregation (whether CofC or Christian Church - doctrinally, we're all basically aligned) is wholly autonomous - no "CofC Conventions" or national leadership councils, etc. In that sense, we're non-denominational.
Worship-wise, the traditional CofC churches are mostly acapella and don't use musical instruments in worship. That is probably the biggest difference between the CofC and Christian Churches, who do utilize musical instruments. Some are dogmatic about it, some not as much so. Personally, I really prefer acapella - have been part of several congregations who really knew how to sing - and sing gloriously! I'm saddened by what I perceive is the modern church's gradual decline in ability to sing - but that's me.
Doctrinally, we're very sound - nothing weird or unusual, generally very conservative and for some, fundamental - though those are labels that need definition iykwim. We do believe in the importance of baptism for the remission of sins - something the modern church disagrees with and sometimes vehemently. If there is concern in that regard, we will always go to the bible and study the topic with people rather than lean on tradition or denominational creeds. We celebrate communion each Sunday; some congregations meet Sunday mornings and evenings, as well as mid-week.
My wife and I worshipped at a Calvary Chapel for a couple of years, there being no CofC in the area. They were an "E-Free" church - evangelical free church and very similar to the Christian church we now attend as far as worship and beliefs - a couple doctrinal issues, but given the choices, we felt blessed at the time to have them in the area.
Do feel free to query myself or anyone else here if you have questions, ok? Would love to have you stay
God bless,

It's not even "too much Old Testament", in the Old Testament God is compassionate, shows mercy, is patient and long-suffering. Consider the lesson we learn from Jonah, or the word delivered to Ezekiel that God does not desire the death of the wicked, that God takes no pleasure or joy in the destruction of the wicked by desires that that the wicked repent and change their ways so they might live and have life. God has always been a merciful, compassionate, kind and patient God who has no desire for the destruction of the wicked, who has loving-kindness for the sinner and for the wicked person to change their ways and truly live and have life. -CryptoLutheran |
