What do you all think of the prospect of a global flu pandemic? Do you think it is imminently upon us, and what should we do to prepare for such a calamity should it occur?
I gave a speech on the influenza pandemic of 1918 in my speech class. Doing the research on it, I was shocked at how awful it was. over 40,000,000 people around the earth died...over 1million in America. Almost everyone in America knew someone who died with the flu.
Although I am unsure about how bad this years flu season may be, I do know they say every few years we have a worse than normal flu season. Just be prepared!

Every year they say that this year will have a horrible flu season, worse than last year, etc... The more they hype it up the less I will be likely to believe it now.

The flu can be deadly. As one of the previous posters stated the Spanish flu killed millions of people. Do not think that you are immune or unlikely to be exposed in Alaska...or any other place for that matter. Influenza is caused by a virus....a virus that is transferred by infected people. So, unless you are totally cut off from the greater world, the chances are that you can be exposed.
What can you do? Get vaccinated, especially if you are at risk....i.e. very young...older than 50...or have another condition that puts you at risk...like asthma, diabetes, heart problems, or other chronic problems. Make sure that you are getting the right kind of food...a variety of foods based on the food pyramid...with an emphasis on foods high in Vitamin C...citrus fruits...if you are aware of people around you with flu symptoms...wash you hands...alot....consider trying ecchinacea to boost your immune system..(not for anyone with autoimmune diseases).
What are the symptoms of flu??? Sudden onset of fever...usually fairly high...near 102 degrees along with weakness. The fever usually lasts for 24 hours with resultant weakness, nasal/sinus congestion, chest congestion, and cough. If you get symtoms like this, seek attention within 24-48 hours of onset, or the medications to treat the symptoms will not help. As with any cause of congestion, push fluids...preferably fluids without caffeine or alcohol...the more the merrier. Take long hot showers. Use a vaporizer if you have one. Take medications like Tylenol, Motrin, or Aleve for lowering any fever and to help any body achiness. Talk to your doctor or other health care provider for other medications that may be needed to relieve symtoms.
You know what I say to the flu? "Bring it on!" Flu has little affect on me. I exercize, sweat it out, take vitamin c suppliments, continue to do the things I normally do, and it's gone in no time. I haven't had it in 3 years actually. But yeah I know nothing of viruses and the genetics behind them, but my uneducated theory is that MAYBE the virus keeps getting worse cuz of the flu shot.. Hmm...
I have been sick for like a month and I cant get the shot! arrgh!!!!

This is very good advice. Another suggestion would be to add as much garlic to your diet as possible, preferrably raw. My husband was really sick a few weeks ago and I crushed a couple cloves of garlic and gave it to him right away with a big glass of water to wash it down. It worked wonders. I heard on The Doctor and the Word with Dr. Cherry that an hour after crushing the garlic it starts to lose its anti-viral properties so you want to crush it and eat it as soon as possible. Another thing I do when my family is sick is to make a big pot of chicken noodle soup with plenty of onions, garlic, pepper, oregano and a little bit of cayenne pepper. Also, you should be washing your hands as often as possible to help stop the spread of germs, even if you're not sick.
