The problems is with us, not the prophecies or the prophets. The same is true with the Bible. The problem is our demands, not the text.
What seems to be missing from this discussion is the fact that many demands come directly from the prophet.
For example, it was the prophet that set the expectation that men must be able to stand in the sight of a holy God without a mediator prior to Jesus' Christ's second coming. This issue does not come from individual SDAs, but from the prophet herself.
Wow! the stats say that I haven't been here in approx. 2 years......glad to come back and see a few good friends.......
That siad, this is an interesting discussion. Can I submit that the test isn't really about whether or not the prophecies come true(as most were and are conditional), but more about the truthfullness, sincerity of the prophet? I consider this also as most of the prophecies we are faced with will or will not be fulfilled in one's lifetime. The only test cannot be the final outcome.
I totally agree about Jonah. God said if the people did not changes their ways he would destroy them. Jonah determined that whether they changed them or not, God would destroy them.

From your username, I think we know each other from a couple of other forums, which I will not name here.

John 8:32 And ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.

Prophets and prophecy give us a way to understand something important we might not be able to understand in the same way without them. When we attempt to assign errant or inerrant status to either, we miss the boat. Pun intended.

We confuse prophets with fortunetellers.
I agree with you. The problem starts when we expect prophets predict the future instead of doing their calling.
Its even worst when the prophets start to comply with this demand for fortunetelling and get it completely wrong. We are all human and prophets, like us, make mistakes. We just need to admit the error and move on.

If a prophet teaches something that is not true, is that prophet from God?

I doubt there is a switch, that when in the "on" position, creates a talking-head with a direct link.
That fact that we need a prophet to teach us an absolute, but are simultaneously in a position to evaluate him/her, is funny. I don't know if that's closer to illusion or delusion.
We are all human prophets, and everyone's view is incomplete. Some views are more incomplete than others. The degree of dark in the "glass darkly" varies. But we evaluate each view offered in every way possible. So it's important to come into relationship with a view - not simply decide about it.
But it's much easier to assign - all or nothing - good/bad right/wrong God/Devil. But it's not very useful much of the time.

If I didn't know better , I'd think some of us where suggesting that we where biblical prophets.
