I was sitting next to a youngish lady at dinner today and she caused me to consider (not notice) how acceptable it is for her and others in our highly moral church to sling low the blouse or dress top in order to manifest some well-endowed assets.
On further consideration, it seems par for the course.
I've got an open-mind. What do others think?
Bear in mind that this didn't impinge on her ability to instigate an extensive and deep Christian discussion.
I think a lot depends on the specific circumstance. If she's wearing clothing like that for the purpose of getting men to stare at her chest and salivate uncontrollably, then she should be asked to wear something more covering. Even if it isn't her intent, but it happening, someone should let her know so she can make the decision on what to do (Most church-goers I know of dress with clothing that makes things somewhat noticeable, but they aren't trying to be lust objects, and if they become one they take steps to keep it from happening in the future).

The world isn't the way it's supposed to be. That's why there's us. Champions. We live as though the world were as it should be, to show it what it can be.
If you want to arrange it, this world you can change it, if we could just somehow make this Christmas thing last... By helping a neighbor, or even a stranger, and to know who needs help, you need only just ask.
I want to be good, I do. I just suck at it a lot of the time.

In general, I don't have a problem with people showing skin, even to full nudity, so long as it's socially appropriate. If Miss Manners would approve, so would I.
Though scripture says we should dress modestly, I'm of the opinion that the definition of modesty is purely culturally relative. Modesty in an Amish village is very strict, but on a beach on the French Riviera it's very loose. In the former setting, I'd need to wear a long dress with long sleeves to be considered modest. In the latter, sunglasses, flip-flops and a bikini bottom might be modest enough, or possibly even overdressed.

From life’s first cry to final breath
Jesus commands my destiny
No power of hell, no scheme of man
Can ever pluck me from His hand
‘Til He returns or calls me home
Here in the power of Christ I’ll stand
Sorry for the sidetrack, but what the whatever is a "highly moral church"?

We are living in a very puritanical period. That is a cultural phenomenon.
IN NT times the human body was not concealed as it is today. Bathing and laundry was done nude in local waterways if available. Slaves were often partially or completely nude. Many manual workers had only one garment and often took that off while working to avoid damage. Peter was fishing nude for example. Any public toilets were not enclosed cubicles. That was also true in Europe and America intil later in the 19th century.
Jewish baptism was performed nude. Thus, John the baptist most likely baptised naked and Jesus would have been naked at His baptism.
In past ages Christian artists painted and sculpted nudes on behalf of other Christian sponsors, including the church.
In a real paradox, current cultural puritanism has resulted in the female body in particular becoming highly eroticised. Thus the original post.
It is of My opinion if Were moderately and conservatively dressed, this would not be an issue right now, as far as being in church , which should be our standard for appropriate dress ,I find that more and more people come to church dressed any way they feel like. I mean with the exception of the older people hardly anyone comes in a nice dress or a suit and tie anymore I see everything from stretch pants to short pants and as far as tops, there doesn't seem to be any modesty with that any more either. Skinny string strapped tops For some ladies and Muscle shirts for the men. Of coarse that's the extreme cases. They dress no different than if they were down town or out to a movie ,shopping or what have You. I think We are a long way from being modest in this society of ours these days. Also our society is a long way from the over chaste ways of the extremist dress code of most of the worlds muslims, with the veil and the Burrka as an example. Society has come a long way from the acceptable dress norm of the fifties and sixties and You would probably agree that society today has come closer to a tribal sort of life with tattoo' s and piercing being quite normal and no worries about what other's think, But it just goes to show what people will do to express themselves and get noticed, it has always been that way it's just that each generation wants to push the envelope a Tad more than the one before and appear different from the generation before them. I suppose this has gone on all through from the time that God put Man on this earth and if Our lord tarries another fifty to a hundred years Who knows how society will be dressing then! Personally I hope I don't see the day when everyone is walking down the street like they do in those gay pride parades that would be awful close to the days of Sodom and You know what God did after He had enough of that. Well thats my opinion and two cents worth , I look forward to hearing more of Your posts on this subject....with The Love of Christ...Dave
