Not sure where I fit in..

I'm not sure how to word this
I do believe in God and Jesus. My mom is Catholic but I'm not sure it's for me. I feel I'm just too "liberal" for Catholicism. I want a place/religion/church that I can feel comfortable with.
I don't really understand the differences between the church of christ, non denomenational, baptist, etc.
I just don't know where to go
Please help.

God has left gems of wisdom and knowledge in each and as you grow and mature, your heart will be seeking to learn more of him. It is often best to start with prayer explaining to God what you are seeking... a social network within the Christian framework... a closer walk with Him.... traditions and rituals that provide structure...etc...

Once you have determined which or which combination is your spiritual fit for your spiritual walk, then it will be easier for us to help you find what you are looking for.

You might try a Lutheran church. Lutherans have retained many of the ancient forms in worship, liturgy, etc. - yet in the context of Biblical Christianity, salvation by grace alone, through faith alone, in Christ alone.

Personally I would recommend an LC-MS or WELS congregation, but you mention you're pretty liberal ... still, I can't in good conscience recommend the most common Lutheran denomination, the ELCA, that has recently become one of the most liberal denoms in the country.

Since you're looking for something "more liberal than the Catholics," two thoughts come to mind:

1. If you live in an urban area with many choices, you could look for a more liberal Catholic parish.
2. You could try out the Protestant denominations that are generally considered liberal, such as the United Church of Christ, the Episcopal Church, and the ELCA Lutheran Church.

We could probably give you a better recommendation if you gave us more specific information on what you're looking for in a church. Are there certain beliefs you hope to find or avoid? Are you looking for a certain type of worship style?

I don't really have any specifics since I'm new to this but i'd like a church like one i had visited once with my friend (the only time i've ever been other than funerals). I believe it was a baptist church but some people were dressed up and others were in jeans. There were children there and it wasn't so quiet during the service that you could hear a pin drop, it was a comfortable atmosphere, like being at a family gathering. whereas, when in a catholic church i feel i can't even move for a noise will disturb the whole service. Oh, and I live in a small country town so I'm quite limited because I have to walk since my parents don't attend church.

One thing to remember.....Christianity is not the same thing as religion. Religion is man made. I also don't know all the differences between the differant religions. I was Baptist for many years before " going non-denominational". I'm in a church now that teaches verse by verse, and is not all all concerned with what one wears or if that have a nose ring, I've always felt that condemnation from the church for such trivial matters was just silly.

The really important thing for me is the main doctrine which is that Christ died a sacrificial death, rose again, and now sits at the right hand of God the Father...and that he is coming back soon for his Church.

In the essentials unity, in the non essentials liberty.

Oh, and I live in a small country town so I'm quite limited because I have to walk since my parents don't attend church.
That is fairly limiting. I can hook you up with a link to my church, they have live streams of every service, and tons of archived teaching. You could use this in addition to your regular church services. The teaching is outstanding. Preservere dear Christian...press forward. Well, I can't post links until I've hit 50 post...but, you can Google>>> Calvary Chapel of the Triad Then click Kernersville Campus, and it will take ya there.

Shalom,

Don B

What's in walking distance? If you give us some ideas of what is available to you it might make it easier for us to help you. I don't know that you are looking for a contemporary services, necessarily, but keep in mind that just about any denomination can have a range between very stodgy and very laid back atmospheres - it may vary from church to church. To me it sounds like you are looking for something "seeker friendly" at least until you have an opportunity to learn more and decide what you believe.

Sounds like you might just want to try the different churches within walking distance -- atmosphere can vary within denominations and is hard to predict ahead of time.

A lot of Protestant churches look like this now, so the search might be easier than you think.

Walking distance might be just fine. God knows where you're walking. Ask Him to lead you.

Be open to other ideas too -- there are some great home Bible studies and mid-week services.
