In 2005, I was invited to a charismatic church that I'd never been to before. That night, they did what they call "soul reaping", a highly emotional experience where you supposedly go into a spiritual trance and receive the Spirit of Christ on you and are then saved. But that church has left me feeling like I'm not allowed to enjoy ANYTHING in life. I feel like I'm not allowed to even feel happiness unless I believe exactly what they believe and what they say goes.
Also, somebody there said that we are living in the final years and now I'm constantly paranoid that the world is coming to an end. I really detest this mindset and I can't break free from it. What can I do??

One of the main tools used by cults is salvation by works. They control you by their code of behavior. If you don't follow it then you are not a "true" believer and are ostracized by them. That sounds like what they are doing. Run as fast as you can from the false teachers.

Nor do they light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on a lampstand, and it gives light to all who are in the house. Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works and glorify your Father in heaven.- Our Lord and Savior.

Hello there AfricanSunset
We live in the same country, and attend the same church (different provinces). I know what you went through. I used to attend a charismatic church before, and you know what? The Lord sent me back to the Dutch Reformed church. A really awesome bunch of people. As a child, I felt tired of life, being lonely. But, the Lord picked me up and gave me new life. Don't worry about the final years (end times) at all. When the time comes, you will be in the arms of Jesus. He will wrap His arms around you and tell you how much He loves you Himself. Just like so
If you are married then different spouses can respond differntly. My husband wouldn't have anything to do with church since 1991, but now he has come back to church. And this is a church similiar to the one we got saved in.
We were part of the Way International for 13 years! It wasn't hard to leave and I got involved with church eventually and found a good church then we moved here and after 7 years or so we finally found our new church home!!
Yeah you have to unlean and learn doctrine as much as it takes in order to move forward.

The whole thing sounds scary and controlling.Jesus wants us free and having peace and rest. Jesus wants us to have a sober mind and be alert. Jesus is our Good Shepherd who leads us to still Waters, not troubled waters.Jesus restores our souls. Jesus yoke is easy and Hi burden is light. Jesus says come to Me all ye who labour and are heavy laden and I will give you Rest, take My yoke upon you and learn of Me for I am meek and lowly in heart and you shall find Rest for you soul, for My yoke is Easy and My Burden is light
Jesus says verily verily I say unto you,he that believeth in Me has everlasting life. Jesus did not say you have to believe in a certain churches many doctrines to have everlasting life, just believe in Jesus. Come to Jesus for truth and rest and peace ,spend time with Jesus. Spend time reading the bible ,the bible is the word of God,the bible renews our mind. The bible is Truth. Jesus is Truth. the Truth sets us free. Jesus said whom the Son sets free is free indeed. people cannot set us free.

As it is written, Behold, I lay in Sion a stumblingstone and rock of offence: and whosoever believethon him shall not beashamed. John 15 5I am the vine, ye are the branches: He that abideth in me, and I in him, the same bringeth forth much fruit: for without me ye can do nothing.
7If ye abide in me, and my words abide in you, ye shall ask what ye will, and it shall be done unto you.
Hmm, well it sounds as if the pastor/preacher is trying to set themselves up to be the arbiter of what it right. Just the fact that you are questioning means be very, very careful. It can happen in all denominations that the preacher becomes arrogant and too powerful. But I've noticed it happens most to folks who believe more in experiences and emotional happenings than a clear reading of the bible in context and along with other verses.
