I know this girl at my school who, according to Facebook, just got engaged. She literally went from "single" to "engaged" out of the blue. Because I was curious, I looked around her Facebook to see if she'd known him for a while, and was surprised to see that her new fiance's mother was "excited to meet her" and telling her really basic things about their family. So it looks like she just met this guy and got engaged to him. There are pictures of her trying on wedding dresses and everything, and they've been engaged for about two weeks.
I think she's an Apostolic Christian so I was just wondering if this is typical. I'm not here to say it's wrong or right or anything. I just wanted to know if that's part of the church's doctrine. If I'm wrong on her denomination, is there a sect of Christianity where people get married that young and out of the blue normally? She's only eighteen or nineteen.

It sounds likely that the church you mentioned was one of the Pentecostal "Apostolic Churches." They use the term to express their desire to be as close to the New Testament Church, as they undertand it, as possible. This forum uses the term "Apostolic Churches" to mean churches that trace their leadership back to one of the Apostles; that is, churches that are in historic Apostolic Succession. These churches include the Roman Catholics, the Eastern Orthodox, the Anglicans, and others.
This is important to us as a means of maintaining the faith and practice of our Lord and His Church, as received through living tradition, from New Testament times, to the present day.
Apostolic Churches", in the second sense of the term, would not, on the whole, have a custom of early marriage. Nor would we advocate, or even normally allow, "quick" marriages. On the contrary, pre-marital counseling would be a requirement for marriage in any Roman Catholic, Eastern Orthodox, Old Catholic, Anglican, etc. church of which I am aware.

That definitely sounds Pentecostal, like the previous poster said. Getting married young in that religious culture is pretty typical, actually. Also, it isn't considered imperative in that particular group for a girl to be serious about obtaining a higher education, and more emphasis is placed on getting married within the group, having kids, and being a home-maker.

Troparion - Tone 4
Commanders of the heavenly hosts, we who are unworthy beseech you, by your prayers encompass us beneath the wings of your immaterial glory, and faithfully preserve us who fall down and cry to you: “Deliver us from all harm, for you are the commanders of the powers on high!”
Holy Archangel Michael, pray to God for me. "Why do you increase your bonds? Take hold of your life before your light grows dark and you seek help and do not find it. This life has been given to you for repentance; do not waste it in vain pursuits."~St. Isaac the Syrian To view links or images in signatures your post count must be 10 or greater.
