How do you know the universe had a beginning? I'm looking for an answer outside of scripture.

The one thing I like about Hoyle is that he is not a Christian, so it goes to show that not all creationist pratts are christians.
Never said they were. However, spend any more than the briefest of periods discussing this topic and you'll come across Hoyle's tornado... I find it ironic that Creationists carry Hoyle, a steady state, exogenesis supporting athiest before them as one of their standards.
Because scientists keep telling us so, and that agrees with what God is telling us.
I am pretty sure that the 'steady state' theory has now been totally disregarded.
Are there specific evidences that scientists use that makes you think the universe has a beginning? So basically, if you were explaining why you think the universe has a beginning and you were explaining it to an atheist who was ignorant of science, what scientific evidence would you give him?

For You are the Lord Most High, of great compassion, long-suffering, and very merciful, and You relent at human suffering. O Lord, according to Your great goodness You have promised repentance and forgiveness to those who have sinned against You, and in the multitude of Your mercies You have appointed repentance for sinners so that they may be saved.
