You should read my liturgy for Sunday service; more smells and bells than the Tridentine Catholics ever had

For You are the Lord Most High, of great compassion, long-suffering, and very merciful, and You relent at human suffering. O Lord, according to Your great goodness You have promised repentance and forgiveness to those who have sinned against You, and in the multitude of Your mercies You have appointed repentance for sinners so that they may be saved.

How bout Verger? I wanna be a verger and carry a mace in the parade!!

Liturgically, a verger appears to be a combination of acolyte and porter.
Historically, they were in many ways "shrine keepers" of the parish they were associated with, administering to the parish buildings, furnishings, and the wellkeeping of its sacred vessels and items, particularly relics. They would also be conduct monitors, making sure the laity were adherent and pious as well as making sure everything was ready for religious services
Today, the closest thing to a verger is perhaps a sexton, although with additional ceremonial (liturgical) authority.

I ran across a booth from the "Vergers Guild" at convention. They seem to be involved in acolyte training, lector training and that sort of thing. Vergers seem to still be alive and well The Vergers Guild | Home Page, although my priest is not getting me a mace no matter how much I ask!

I was going to mention this very fact, but you found out for yourself -- we had a verger at my last parish, and yes, this is exactly the role he occupied.
And they carry a "verge"... I don't know what they'd say if you called it a mace to their face!

You're at/been at Convention 2009? Forgive me, but you have my utter jealously directly at you! I love to hear your opinions and your insights on everything, but that is, of course, another subject beyond this one.

That sounds about right. Vergers historically also were something of a Master of Ceremonies, so acolyte and lector training would go hand-in-hand with such a role.
My college parish had a verger. He was complete with a mace and all the trappings it seemed. He's now a deacon at that parish. I hope to actually visit that church and say hello to everyone there in October if I find the time.
Unfortunately (or not!), I never saw him have to use his mace

Does it float in water?
