Legalism vs. The Conviction of the Holy Spirit that it is better not to do something

There have been times when I have felt guilty regarding eating pork or
eating seafood like shrimp and lobster. I don't know why...I just felt
a little on the guilty side - sort of like eating chocolate cake for
breakfast instead of steak and eggs or hashbrowns or pancakes with
a glass of orange juice.
At some point the above has to be cultural. Cereal and milk included.
There was a point in my life when I put aside many things including
frostings, processed sugars, soda pop (the conviction was that God
did not intend us to carbonate our drinks), and pork, lobster, crab
and shrimp were definitely on that list. I still wonder about at what
point I was being legalistic verses being obedient to the conviction
of the Holy Spirit. Keep in mind that during this time I believed in
only eating healthy fruits and vegetables and lean meats and drinking
only water and natural juices. I did not believe it was in the best
interests of my body to drink coffee, tea, or even hot chocolate
let alone alcohol. Wine was o.k. in moderation (4 to 6 oz). I was
against processed foods and particularly saturated fats and processed
sugars. This was not something I studied. This was strickly spiritual
conviction. I remember being against eating pork but poultries were
good in moderation.
But Acts 10: 10-14 later gave me trouble interpreting my own
conviction back those days. Perhaps I should study this passage
more.
Is it better to NOT eat a pig? Bacon? Ham?
I have always wondered about the Easter tradition of eating Ham.
I believe it is a symbol of freedom because of the Resurrection
but perhaps I am not certain. Perhaps it is just different than
eating turkey again.
Is it wrong to eat pork chops?
I haven't thought and prayed about this for years now....
perhaps I should?
The logic of employing logic and limitations which are harmful

I know that you would want to specify this to the church age, since
you would not say that the Torah was demonic doctrine.
There IS a point at which you and I draw lines. Clearly if something
is known to be harmful we will not intentionally eat it and be grateful
for it.
God created mercury, but that doesn't mean we should eat inorganic
substances that are known to be harmful. God created plants that
are poisonous but that doesn't mean that it is a demonic doctrine
NOT to be grateful for them.
We need to employ logic and draw lines at some point with regards
to the things that God created vs the things that God "intended"
us to eat freely of.
There is a difference between eating a chicken or a turkey and
eating certain poisonous salamanders.
There is a difference between eating healthy leaf lettuce and
eating cannabus.
God created them both...but not necessarily to share freely.
Hello, my name Boris, I live Australia now but bfor was in Ruussia. Recently I become Christian (born agin) and I try to understand all things in Bible. My family never practice any religion, in Russia. So I not complete understand. My quesion is - why Chhristian not allowed eat pig? In Leviticuus 11 it say all animals like pig, kite, owl, moth 'detestable' which in my dictionary mean bad. SO: why god allow us to eat grasshoppr but not moth and pig? I like eating pig bvery much.
Thank you
This subject is a VERY touchy one for many people because it deals with the one of the carnal desires that Satan can (and has) exploit. We (human race) are born with a natural tendency to do evil. Paul calls our carnal nature the "outward/old man" and he is at war with our spiritual nature the "inward man/new man". By nature we do not like our liberties restricted in any area so we are naturally going to err on the side of what we want. With all due respect to those in this thread I must speak directly and say we are very much still subject to this law for one simple reason.......unclean meats didn't suddenly become ok after the cross. After sin entered the world, certain animals were set aside by God to clean up the filth on land and in the sea. They have not stopped being "nature's garbage desposal" after the cross.
Here is one verse that cannot be denied........ 15 For, behold, the LORD will come with fire, and with his chariots like a whirlwind, to render his anger with fury, and his rebuke with flames of fire.
16 For by fire and by his sword will the LORD plead with all flesh: and the slain of the LORD shall be many. 17 They that sanctify themselves, and purify themselves in the gardens behind one tree in the midst, eating swine's flesh, and the abomination, and the mouse, shall be consumed together, saith the LORD. Isaiah 15-17
It's quite clear here that these verses deal with God's judgement on the world at his second coming. Also notice that the Lord equates the swine with the mouse. Why do those believing that pork eating is ok but would never consider other animals, that have the exact same function as the swine, as fit to eat.
Most evangelical christians believe homosexuality to be a sin, and rightly so. However, it is in Leviticus that we learn that homosexuality is sin and that's exactly where the dietary laws are found. Why be so staunchly opposed to one while defending the other? Truthfully, the confusion lies in a misunderstanding of certain passages in the new testament that deal with foods like Colossians 2:16 for instance....
16Let no man therefore judge you in meat, or in drink, or in respect of an holyday, or of the new moon, or of the sabbath days:
This reference has nothing to do with unclean meats being ok now. The passage in context is dealing with meat and drink offerings in the OT sanctuary services (Exodus 29:41; Ezra 7:17; Ezekiel 45:17......ect.). There are quite a few examples like this but I'll leave it at that for now.
Best thing for you to do is pray to God to give you the answer, open your bible with an open mind and he'll show it to you.

Go to a feed mill store and check out the large cans of Drano. On the back you'll find the instructions on how to flush out a pig.
Decades ago now, my dad was done south working on a project and one day the guys decided to go to a well-known restuarant for their famous pork ribs. One of them who knew that my dad doesn't eat pork asked him what he was going to eat. The others immediately wanted to know why he wasn't going to eat the ribs like the rest of them. When my dad told them because of what it says in the Bible, they poo-poo'ed him. Then my dad's boss who was a chemical engineer told them about a study he had done on pigs while in college (animals are a living chemical factory). When he finished they decided not to go to the rib joint. I'd love to get my hands on that study!

When they are wrong on the simple, why should you listen to them on the more complex?

One rule you can always count on: never, ever trust the critics on anything. They've proven that they cannot, and will not, tell you the whole truth and nothing but the truth.
