Sometimes the gifts were directed at individuals, and sometimes with embarrassing and hurtful results.
I said all that to point out what has scarred some people away from charismatic churches. Most of what happened in that church was very good, but enough was strange so that it could be alarming to visitors (and regulars).

Over the years, many pastors have gotten a stomach full of this kind of stuff, and perhaps they've become a little gun-shy as a result.

There has also arisen over the past decade or two a new "prophetic" movement that seems to breed a lot of hyper-prophesying on the part of some it's adherents. I'm not trying to put them down, but you can visit other corners of this forum and find these folks. They want to prophesy too quickly about future events, and are too quick to offer personal prophesies to hungry individuals.

Brother Hagin spoke often about these kind of excesses. I'm not telling anyone else what to believe, or what to do, but I am offering some reasons why some Pastors may be putting the brakes on a little of the activity that used to be more prominent.

Besides that, if we are to blame the Pastors, then we should look at the attendees as well, who come hoping to be impressed, entertained and sang to instead of bringing the supply of the Spirit like we are supposed to.

Just my 2 cents!
I agree DMW, this is exactly the same troubles that the leadership of the Thessalonian church experienced.

1 Thessalonians 5:19-21 KJV
(19) Quench not the Spirit.
(20) Despise not prophesyings.
(21) Prove all things; hold fast that which is good.

Because of the harmful excesses, they had grown to despise prophecy all together, but Paul instructs not to throw the baby out with the bath water so to speak.

It takes work to maintain a proper flow of the service that is open to the Spirit. It means stopping the service to bring correction, not allowing the flesh to take over & even confrontation at times. It means demonstrations
& outpourings of the Spirit, special miracles & casting out demons!

Its much easier to just go back into the comfort zone of your power point outline, bulletin led program (notice I didnt say "service").

This is kind of a side note but when you are entering into the flow of the spirit you don't want to interrupt that flow. It has always bothered me when I am watching someone preaching away on TV and I'm lapping it up but then, suddenly, they interrupt themselves to talk about their ministry or being a partner( which is a good thing). Then you try to enter back into the flow and what was being said before. But the Lord doesn't interrupt Himself!

This is an old conversation that I happened to remember. Well I found it several pages back! Here is it January and I am just now entering this discussion the reason being, I was listening to a 2 week teaching, a discussion between Billye Brim and Gloria Copeland and this was the very topic. The Holy Spirit reminded me of this thread, so I am posting the link to this broadcast.

Christian Worship, Ministry Webcasts, Biblical Faith, Bible Teaching - Kenneth Copeland Ministries

There are two weeks worth, one entitled
An Awakening to God Through the Holy Spirit

and the other
How to Move in the Power of the Holy Spirit

....if anyone is interested. One statement made that impressed me, as an answer to the op, is pastors need to teach on the move and the gifts of the Spirit if you want to see the Spirit of God move in our services. In our church, we specifically ask the LORD in pre-service prayer to move in our midst. We ask for the gifts of the Spirit to be in operation and the LORD answers in amazing ways. We see direct answers to specific prayers in ways we did not expect. We expect Him to move, but just how He does is not apparent to us beforehand, so it is always amazing and wondrous to see Him answer.

Some great teaching from Gloria and Billye. Having a little time on my hands today, that has been such a blessing to listen to.

Thanks!!!

They are a blessing! The tail end of the last Friday's teaching was superb.

I think it is a "I am the leader/teacher" position. They do not want to leave any attention to any other person other than themselves. WoF ministers can be very selfish with the pulpit.

I am jealous of my pulpit... I treat it as a sacred place, speaking life and truth into people's life and I do not let it out lightly.

I agree. About seven years ago when I was in an AOG praise band suddenly the format was changed by the new pastor. There would be one song, then announcements, the another song, then communion, then another song and the pastor as the 'worship supervisor' telling us to start, stop, sing louder now, quieter now. It was like start, stop, start, stop.

The old format was five or six songs continuously, praise and worship leading people into a prophecy time. The worship leader, after three weeks of this horrible new system confronted the pastor about it, the pastor said he felt the worship was stealing his limelight and he wanted to cut it back.

Sad, but that was the beginning of the end for that church.

So, in the case of praise and worship, GO WITH THE FLOW!

Full Gospel Pastor in Dundee also said that!
