Hello, im new to this place so hello =) But anyways I don’t know if a wheat intolerant equals being allergic to it... but it is ruining my life, whenever i have a single drop of wheat (which there is like 7 different names for wheat on labels and all starch I can’t even eat) i get really ill, i bloat for a week or more, and I don’t mean like a little bit, I mean I can gain about 8 pounds from it, clothes not being able to fit me, so I have to have some clothes for when I accidently eat wheat. I also get stomach pains, feel tired, plus not forgetting that i live on the toilet all day afterwards. Many people think it’s just wheat, but wheat is in everything, all cookies, cakes, breads, dough substances, fast food places, pizzas, alot of chocolate and candy, many sauces and nearly all meat not unless they are just chicken or bacon or something in that nature as many of them have wheat in to bulk them out, so to me this is a big deal and of course it stops me from going to restaurants, eating out and about, I have to remember to bring lunch with me or remember to bring food with me to a friend’s house if I’m having dinner there or staying over... I have to make sure trays are washed, never put my food or a surface, crumbs in butters have to pick around it... I HATE IT! Of course im trying for it not to take over my life but when I eat abit which always happens I swear it knocks me out for a week, does anyone else have the same problem? I hate how I have to read every single label in the shops, people just stare as me like I have a problem… |

Celiac disease is an intolerance for the gluten found in wheat, rye and barley and causes changes to the small intestines in people with celiac. The testing usually starts with blood tests and possibly an endoscopy. It is important to keep consuming gluten containing foods until you are tested for the results to be accurate.
If you have celiac disease and go gluten free, your symptoms should clear up in several months. |

I went Gluten free almost a year ago, because like you, I was having not only digestive upsets, but a literal health decline where my liver, thyroid, and nervous system were being affected as well.
It is a LONG and HARD road to be GF, but the price you pay in limiting the foods you eat more than makes up for your health being intact and feeling better.
I hope that as you go along the road of recovery and discovering what helps you that you will feel better more and more each day and be satisfied with feeling better.
There are a lot of awesome GF sites to give you hints on how to get started. And many health food stores are a great source of GF products as well as many grocery stores like Winn Dixie and Publix.

I have an intolerance/mild allergy to wheat, as does my cousin, and while we stay wheat free most of the time, we can "cheat" with up to a spoonful of flour in things without it bothering us overmuch. Not that we do cheat, except with a piece of Chinese food now and then. But her intolerance is more of a day-after joint pain, and mine is an immediate-reaction respiratory inflammation (sneezing, coughing, itching like crazy, etc). Which means I have to be more careful than her (she can eat spelt, where as I have to stay away from all wheat and barley as well), but still, it's not a severe, full-body reaction.
So, I hope by now you've figured it out! It sounds brutal, and it's always better when you've figured it out. |

Back then there was no substitutions at restaurants and not a lot of stores that sold alternatives. My mom cooked me a lot of Asian food because it's mostly rice as well as making me sandwiches made from lettuce being the bread with meat and mayo inside.
It's frustrating cause wheat is in so many things, even Soya sauce. Restaurants now are a lot more accepting and accommodating when some one has an allergy or dietary needs than they used to be. |

I challenge that statement. I've been gluten free for nearly 4 yrs now - because of it my quality of life has improved. I was becoming anorexic, my liver and thyroid were shutting down, and I was experiencing chronic fatigue and depression before I cut gluten out of my diet. Becoming gluten free probably saved my life. Gluten free cannot be a half-butt effort - you have to give it gusto and stick to it if you plan to see results. It can take up to a MONTH for your body to detox gluten - and even longer if you don't adhere and indulge on occasion or if you get cross-contamination from other sources.

If anyone is interested in wheat/gluten free recipes, (or other allergy recipes) email me (furfoot12 at aol.com) I have been allergic to wheat, eggs, milk, corn, and potatoes off and on for years. |
