Why must they be religious writers? fantasy is fantasy no matter who writes it. |

Gene Wolfe's work isn't overtly Christian, but stuff like the Book of the New Sun and Book of the Long Sun definitely contain some Christian themes.
Edit to add: Frank Herbert's Dune series isn't at all Christian, but is well worth reading for the great commentary on the sociopolitical aspects of religion.

I personally rate David Gemmell as one of the best. It is fairly bloodthirsty but there are definite themes there which are very powerful and very close to Christian. I don't think he was a Christian but I hope he was as he died recently.
If you just want fantasy without too much magic then Anne McCaffery's early books (e.g. the Dragon series) were excellent and fairly safe.

I've read several stories from Arthur C Clarke that would seem to suggest he was religious or at one time religious. Not sure on that tho.
(I remember childhood's end having lots of biblical endtimes imagery albeit with a few twists here and there)

simon r green is religious... though you should be careful in some of his newer books he has started bringin up some stuff that might offend people... he has a few characters who are gay in some newer stuff... and on a rare occassion a cuss word here and there... but reading his older stuff its much more religious backed... Try reading, 'Drinking Midnight Wine', 'Shadows Falls', and 'Blue Moon Rising'

Gene Wolfe is another author that comes from a religious background in how he phrases things though I don't know if I'd say that his work is always that edifying since it's so complex and multilayered as to lead to thousands of interpretations. The stories definitely have more meaning to a Christian, but there is almost always an out of "oh well that's not really miraculous at all." Somewhat comparable to the new Battlestar Galactica, except that's probably a bad comparison since Gene Wolfe's a million times more competent at it.
