I am shopping for a new computer , and I wanted to get some input on what is a good computer for less than $700.00 or $500.00( even though some might say you can't get a good computer for that price. I am more interested in brands rather than specifics( ex. Dell, emachines, etc.) Based on experience which are the best buy and have lest amount of problems. Thank you

In the price range I would say all brands are pretty much equal. The parts inside are often completely identical, the software is the same, and the life expectancy won't change much. Watch your local adds for a few weeks to get a feel for what your price range will get you and then buy a good deal when you see it.
Depending on your purpose you might want to consider swapping your Windows for a better operating system like Ubuntu in which case software wont be an issue at all...
Bought mine almost 3 years ago and still have no need to replace or upgrade anything~bootcamp/parallel for your windows stuff if you need to; great stuff...starting at $599...

As a Mac user I should have thought of that! Good Point!
I never buy a set computer myself but pick up the parts that I want, so I don't think I'm much help. The Mac suggestion sounds good for what you seem to want. The parts for my last computer, at the moment of purchase two years ago, cost me about 1200$.

If this is a replacement, don't forget to look for systems without monitors, if the one you've got is still working without issues.

Isaiah 8:12-13 (NIV) "Do not call conspiracy everything that these people call conspiracy; do not fear what they fear, and do not dread it. The Lord Almighty is the one you are to regard as holy, he is the one you are to fear, he is the one you are to dread."

Well, if you're trying to keep it in that price range, going used rather than new might be your best bet...I got a used PowerBook back in the day for $800 (price new was almost $2,000)...and I've had good luck with it thus far.

Dell will probably be your best bet for a new desktop, but I would wait a little longer till they have a sale. Most companies usually have a huge labor day sale.
Don't get a name brand computer; get it built. Also, you may want to use Linux instead of Windows.
Umm You can use Linux on brand names computers.
