I'd concur that music, and any facet of culture, is the sort of thing that is arguable the whole point of humanity. Sure, it's all a drain on resources, and won't feed anyone or provide them shelter, but without it the food and shelter aren't really worth much now are they?
Music, art, architecture, stories, plays, poems, games, sports, festivals, celebrations... they're all forms of culture.
Whoa whoa whoa formy. What is Haram, does it apply to ALL music, and who specifically believes in this?
As pretty much every muslim country in the world has its own music, I highly doubt that the vast majority of muslims is as extremist as formy in this regard.
And yes, people who seek to wipe out culture are combating one of the most sparkling hallmarks of humanity. To me, one of the few redeeming features of organized religion is its patronage of the arts: cathedrals, mosques, music, murals, paintings, poetry, literature in general.
The darkest hours in history saw religious extremists destroying monuments of the creative spirit.

Peace everyone, I just want to ask formy about the meaning of "Prophet David's Songs" which are called " Mazameer Dawoud " why in particular they are called " Mazameer" which means flutes in English? Just post a hadieth said by prophet Muhammed ( peace be upon him) says that songs are forbidden. Don't birds sing to praise the Almighty? Just look at the creations of Allah how colorful and many they are.And He is not asked to make them in that huge variety to please our eyes to praise Him. He can make the Earth as dry as the desert and ask us to worship him under the hot sunlight, can't He do that? But He loves us so much to make us live this long life with patience and soul comfort away from Him and His Heaven. A song that has words to praise the Almighty and talks about His secrets in the world is not forbidden. A song that tells us how to solve the mystery of life through its disguised words is not forbidden. If you love to give your dry dull worship to the Almighty instead of making it as colorful and various as what He created to us. We are the ones who are asked to please Him but not the opposite. Just watching Free Willy and its famous song " Will you be there " reminds me of the story of prophet Yunus ( peace be upon him) who was swallowed by the whale . But people who made their worship to the Almighty like an obligatory duty are the ones who can't see that the love of the Almighty is everywhere and in everything. Just notice that the majority of Michael Jackson's songs are like prayers to the Almighty and it shows from his moves. If people just take a minute to meditate the Greatness of the Almighty they will discover wonders that exists around them everyday but they are too busy and too lifeless to see things through their hearts and brains. Hold Me Like The River Jordan And I Will Then Say To Thee You Are My Friend
Carry Me Like You Are My Brother Love Me Like A Mother Will You Be There?
Weary Tell Me Will You Hold Me When Wrong, Will You Skold Me When Lost Will You Find Me?
But They Told Me A Man Should Be Faithful And Walk When Not Able And Fight Till The End But I'm Only Human
Everyone's Taking Control Of Me Seems That The World's Got A Role For Me I'm So Confused Will You Show To Me You'll Be There For Me And Care Enough To Bear Me
(Hold Me) (Lay Your Head Lowly) (Softly Then Boldly) (Carry Me There)
(Lead Me) (Love Me And Feed Me) (Kiss Me And Free Me) (I Will Feel Blessed)
(Carry) (Carry Me Boldly) (Lift Me Up Slowly) (Carry Me There)
(Save Me) (Heal Me And Bathe Me) (Softly You Say To Me) (I Will Be There)
(Lift Me) (Lift Me Up Slowly) (Carry Me Boldly) (Show Me You Care)
(Hold Me) (Lay Your Head Lowly) (Softly Then Boldly) (Carry Me There)
(Need Me) (Love Me And Feed Me) (Kiss Me And Free Me) (I Will Feel Blessed)
[Spoken] In Our Darkest Hour In My Deepest Despair Will You Still Care? Will You Be There? In My Trials And My Tripulations Through Our Doubts And Frustrations In My Violence In My Turbulence Through My Fear And My Confessions In My Anguish And My Pain Through My Joy And My Sorrow In The Promise Of Another Tomorrow I'll Never Let You Part For You're Always In My Heart.

Great post dnihila. And music is a great medium for the message of human unity and love. And anyone sect or religion which wishes to destroy it is a dark and dreary religion.

Music is a window to the soul. A form of the highest expression of our humanity. Our fears, love, hate, hopes, dreams, defeats.
Why anyone would call it "Haram", which I assume is something equivalent to "evil", I do not know.
Any culture in history has had it's own music, in some form or other. At least that's what I assume. Correct me if I'm wrong. But do so with evidence.

Haram = not allowed. Forbidden by God.

No, you're right. Islamic cultures have had music, despite the religious opinions that were against it. As far as I can tell, most traditional Muslim commentators ruled that musical instruments were haram, except the daff (a sort of Arab tambourine):
2) Lawful, like the playing of the tambourine (daff) at weddings and other happy occasions” (Ibn Humam, Fath al-Qadir, 6/36).
I think male singing is allowed as well.
But a lot (most?) Muslims don't follow these rulings.

It's kind of like how Mormons aren't supposed to have caffeine, yet all the Mormons I know drink soda or coffee.
I couldn't live without coffee, personally. XD
Also I tend to consider "forbidden by God" as a synonym for evil, whether or not that is a flawed notion or not I do not know. But it is the impression I receive, perhaps from my being brought up xtian for some 20 years.
However, thank you for educating me on the exact defintion, Nooj. I appreciate it.

Peace, Thanks alot everyone. The point is to see what brain and heart do when they act in harmony. I found out that Michael Jackson was sending signals like whales in the way he dances. He was one of the few if not the only singer who adobted the world's problems by songs. And if you look at his gestures and moves on stage, you will notice that he was calling people to be one and he gathered the signs of every Holy religion and showed them in his dancing moves. To be continued

Well, there was John Lennon, George Harrison, Curtis Mayfield, Bob Dylan and a few others from mainly the 60s and 70s.
