The most powerful verse for the Ten Commandments

Romans 13:8-10 Owe no one anything except to love one another, for he who loves another has fulfilled the law. For the commandments, "You shall not commit adultery,'' "You shall not murder,'' "You shall not steal,'' "You shall not bear false witness,'' "You shall not covet,'' and if there is any other commandment, are all summed up in this saying, namely, "You shall love your neighbor as yourself.'' Love does no harm to a neighbor; therefore love is the fulfillment of the law.

Love fulfills the Law because if you love you will do no harm to your neighbor. In other words, you won't murder, steal, lie, covet or commit adultery. Love also fulfills the other half of the Law in that you will do no harm to God. In other words, you won't have other Gods before God, make no images, not use God's name in vain and you will keep the Sabbath holy.

We can't express godly love without the Ten Commandments.

Love fulfills the law, as in it satisfies it's requirements and obligations.

This Love need to clarified more. Not all love fulfilled law, but only love other then yourself which is love in wisdom. For all kind of sins arise because one loves himself. hence love is only made perfect if it is toward others, and God.

But if you do not love yourself--how would you know HOW to love one another? If you didn't realize hurt feelings over a wrong done to you--how would you know how another feels about the same thing?

Le 19:18 Thou shalt not avenge, nor bear any grudge against the children of thy people, but thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself: I am the LORD.
Le 19:34 But the stranger that dwelleth with you shall be unto you as one born among you, and thou shalt love him as thyself; for ye were strangers in the land of Egypt: I am the LORD your God.
Ps 50:21 These things hast thou done, and I kept silence; thou thoughtest that I was altogether such an one as thyself: but I will reprove thee, and set them in order before thine eyes.
Mt 19:19 Honour thy father and thy mother: and, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself.
Mt 22:39 And the second is like unto it, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself.
Mr 12:31 And the second is like, namely this, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself. There is none other commandment greater than these.
Lu 10:27 And he answering said, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy strength, and with all thy mind; and thy neighbour as thyself.
Ro 13:9 For this, Thou shalt not commit adultery, Thou shalt not kill, Thou shalt not steal, Thou shalt not bear false witness, Thou shalt not covet; and if there be any other commandment, it is briefly comprehended in this saying, namely, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself.
Ga 5:14 For all the law is fulfilled in one word, even in this; Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself.
Jas 2:8 If ye fulfil the royal law according to the scripture, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself, ye do well:

As you can see, from the OT to the new--LOVE of self and others is taught. But love for self is not to be selfish love. It is a love of appreciation of your body and mind that you keep it healthy and holy unto the Lord.

Let's play this thought out a moment. You say that love 'satisfies the requirements and obligations'. Let's see if this is true.

I love my husband. I took wedding vows to be 'true' to him and cling ONLY to him. So--does my love negate those promises? Can I, under the guise of loving my husband, give my body to another?

Under the assumption of love, can I neglect to care for my elderly parents?

Does love for my country permit me to spy against it and be a traitor?

Ricker, when Paul admonished this...Ro 3:31 Do we then make void the law through faith? God forbid: yea, we establish the law.

Do you see that he is saying this same thing? When we love--we automatically establish, in our hearts, the 'ground rules' for exercising that love. Most of the time, these 'rules' or principles if you like, are unwritten or unspoken. For instance, a mother just 'naturally' see's to every need of her baby. No one has to tell her that she should not poison that baby, or throw it out in the thrash. Real love from God carries with it the rules of that love. Just like a hand in a glove.

In God's eyes, and in the eyes of them that love him, the 10c are not simply rules to live by--they are 10 PROMISES!

2Pe 1:4 Whereby are given unto us exceeding great and precious promises: that by these ye might be partakers of the divine nature, having escaped the corruption that is in the world through lust.

You see--as God is more and more welcomed into our minds, the love of sin is expelled. Sin becomes repugnant to us. We begin to hate it just as God Himself hates it. And as we see sin in it's true light--and become repulsed by it--then we naturally turn away from it and become true servants of God and not of satan.

Ro 6:16 Know ye not, that to whom ye yield yourselves servants to obey, his servants ye are to whom ye obey; whether of sin unto death, or of obedience unto righteousness?

The promises of the 10 become dear to us because now we are FREE from the bondage of sin. We become partakers of the very nature of Christ, in which satan found nothing to respond to his temptations.

What a wonderful promist this is!!! How marvelous to break free from the mind set that keeps us seperated from the Father. As we look into the marvels of the law of liberty, we will say in our hearts...

De 3:24 O Lord GOD, thou hast begun to shew thy servant thy greatness, and thy mighty hand: for what God is there in heaven or in earth, that can do according to thy works, and according to thy might?

Do you need instructons as how to love your spouse? Do you need to be told to comfort him when he has had a bad day, laugh with him when he tells a joke, care for him when he is sick? Would you commit adultery if it weren't prohibited by a command?

under the assumption of love, can I neglect to care for my elderly parents?
No. If you love them you will do whatever possible to make them comfortable and happy.

Does love for my country permit me to spy against it and be a traitor?
No. Again we know this instictively.

Ricker, when Paul admonished this...Ro 3:31 Do we then make void the law through faith? God forbid: yea, we establish the law.
We don't make void the law, but neither are we under it. Israel was under it with the old covennt. The law an prophets witnessed (pointed) to Christ.

Romans 3
19Now we know that whatever the law says it speaks to those who are under the law, so that every mouth may be stopped, and the whole world may be held accountable to God. 20For by works of the law no human being will be justified in his sight, since through the law comes knowledge of sin.
21But now the righteousness of God has been manifested apart from the law, although the Law and the Prophets bear witness to it 22the righteousness of God through faith in Jesus Christ for all who believe. For there is no distinction: .......... 27( Then what becomes of our boasting? It is excluded. By what kind of law? By a law of works? No, but by the law of faith. 28For we hold that one is justified by faith apart from works of the law. 29Or is God the God of Jews only? Is he not the God of Gentiles also? Yes, of Gentiles also

Not everyone is under the law. Can you see the Gentiles Christians don't have the law?

Do you see that he is saying this same thing? When we love--we automatically establish, in our hearts, the 'ground rules' for exercising that love. Most of the time, these 'rules' or principles if you like, are unwritten or unspoken. For instance, a mother just 'naturally' see's to every need of her baby. 2Pe 1:4 Whereby are given unto us exceeding great and precious promises: that by these ye might be partakers of the divine nature, having escaped the corruption that is in the world through lust.
I know you think the 10 are God's divine nature exeplified, but can you document that fronm the Bible?

You see--as God is more and more welcomed into our minds, the love of sin is expelled. Sin becomes repugnant to us. We begin to hate it just as God Himself hates it. And as we see sin in it's true light--and become repulsed by it--then we naturally turn away from it and become true servants of God and not of satan.

I actually like this a lot, humbling though it is. Sin is awful and does separate us from God. I pray my nature becomes more and more like Christ's

Do not let the modern psychologist full you, thinking one does not love himself won't know how to love others. there is little learning for self love. Hence the minimum basic, for those who don't know how ot love others, is that try to love them the way you do to yourself. Love your neighbor AS thyself is the minimum basic.

but the demand for love should not stay at foundation, but go further. Tell me, how do you love your enemy and love yourself at the same time? between the 2, something got to give. right?

I know you think the 10 are God's divine nature exeplified, but can you document that fronm the Bible?

Yes I can!!...

Isaiah 45:21 “Tell you, and bring them near; yes, let them take counsel together: who has declared this from ancient time? who has told it from that time? have not I the LORD? and there is no God else beside me; a just God and a Saviour; there is none beside me.”

The Ten Commandments Compared to God's Character

It is through the Ten Commandments that God reveals His very own nature and character. The characteristics and attributes of God are so numerous that to list and expound upon them thoroughly would require much more space than we have here. The table below gives an excellent comparison from scripture on how the Ten Commandments and Gods glorious and perfect loving character share the same attributes. This is because the Ten Commandments are love as God is love and thus they do share identical attributes. The Ten Commandments therefore provide the perfect moral and social rules of behaviour, which when followed will guide a person towards having a more Christ and God like character. This is something that all Christians should desire and strive to achieve.
The Ten Commandments as given on Mount Sinai are a reflection of God's nature in that they also contain universal and unchanging principles of morality and describe our relationship to God and our fellow human beings. Through God's law the Holy Spirit convicts us of sin and brings us to a sense of helplessness. The law of God is the instrument by which the Spirit calls us to repentance. Paul said, “What shall we say then? Is the law sin? God forbid. No, I had not known sin, but by the law: for I had not known lust, except the law had said, You shall not covet.” Romans 7:7. Without the law there is no transgression (Romans 4:15) and hence no sin to repent from as sin is transgression of the law. 1 John 3:4. The reason God cannot tolerate sin is because it is a defilement of His very own character.
