Nun population down more than 50% since Vatican II
"Nuns were the often-unsung workers who helped build the Roman Catholic Church in this country, planting schools and hospitals and keeping parishes humming. But for the last three decades, their numbers have been declining — to 60,000 today from 180,000 in 1965."

Saving faith is an immediate relation to Christ, accepting, receiving, resting upon Him alone, for justification, sanctification, and eternal life by virtue of God's grace.
--C.H. Spurgeon
A nunis a woman who has taken special vows committing her to a religious life. She may be an ascetic who voluntarily chooses to leave mainstream society and live her life in prayer and contemplation in a monastery or convent. The term "nun" is applicable to the Catholics (both eastern and western traditions) Orthodox, Anglicans, Lutherans, Jains, Buddhists, and Taoists, for example. While in common usage the terms nun and sister are often used interchangeably, properly speaking a nun is a female religious who lives a contemplative life of prayer and meditation within a monastery while a sister (in the Christian religions) lives an active vocation of service to the needy, sick, poor, and uneducated.

I wouldnt say Vatican II is what is causing the nun decrease, but something else that is effecting all of Christianity and destroying the foundations of Christianity.
And I tell you that you are Peter, and on this rock I will build my church, and the gates of Hades will not overcome it.
Matthew 16:18
Im just saying, the skyrocketing number of abortions, gay marriage, and other sins against God are more rampart and many "Christians" seem to accept them. People think you just need to call yourself Christian and that makes you one, yet do not understand that you need to carry your cross and follow Jesus.

For the time will come when men will not put up with sound doctrine. Instead, to suit their own desires, they will gather around them a great number of teachers to say what their itching ears want to hear.
2 Timothy 4:3

Maybe it has to do with Sister Mary Stigmata's appearance in the Blues Brothers movie in 1980.

I think the Church's attitude about vocations have changed. Before, if you wanted to be a priest/nun it was assumed that you had a vocation. Today, it's like you have to show evidence you have one.
Another thing is society. How many parents today want their children to be priests or nuns?
Then it's wealth. In many Catholic countries a minor Seminary (who admitted 9 y/o boy) was a better alternative than an orphanage. It was free education of the best quality. Most of these did not become priests, of course, because a Seminary education in places where most people did not have a HS diploma, and the work ethics it gave you, meant business owner would hire in the spot. However even some of these boys ended up being priests. This I know from talking to older priests.
Very few people know what priests and nuns and other consecrated persons are and do, just the TV/Hollywood version of it.
