Marmite?

Hello,

I was just wondering if anyone has tried marmite. I believe its a traditional yeast spread from England. It sounds strange but I've always been curious about it. Is it really something edible? Any folks here from England who can clue me in? Does it taste good? Do you spread it on bread? Or do you just add it as an ingredient to something else?

Thanks!

Christ marmite

Hi -

There's an ad campaign for marmite which is very widely known in the UK: you either love it or you hate it. You can pretty much ask any UK citizen and they'll express a strong opinion either way.

Personally, I love it. You have to spread it thinly. Best on warm buttered toast. It's salty and yeasty and warming and generally reminds people of their childhood. You can have marmite sandwiches, but toast is a million times better. It sort of tastes a bit like beef stock cube or Bovril, but it's spreadable. You can add it to cooking, like gravy, perhaps, but personally I don't. It's pretty nice on toast with baked beans on top, but it wouldn't work the same way with egg on top.

Marmite on toast - when you're convalescing, home late, cold or in need of consolation. Fantastic stuff. Now watch for a post from the "hate it" faction! I can understand why though, it's kind of like anchovies - an aquired taste which you... either love or hate.
