Got a phone call from mum last night to tell me that my sister, Collette, has just found out that there are some major problems with her baby. Seems that the baby has all sorts of issues (she's 12wks preg) and the Drs have advised that she terminate the pregnancy.
As you can imagine, I'm horrified! And I'm so hoping that my sister doesn't go through with it...and gets another scan and a second opinion on the pregnancy.
My mother, however, seems to think that it's the best thing. Her reasoning is that the baby wil probably have long term issues that they would probably die of anyway and rather than go through the heartache of losing a child (having been there herself) she thinks it's better that they terminate now.
I'm shocked!!!!!
My mother....who hates alchohol, cigarettes...swear words (we could never even say the word 'crap' without her being offended), violance...anything that is against God. And for which she left Dad for (among other things) and yet she thinks it's quite reasonable that my sister has an abortion. I don't understand!
I told her that I pray that Collette changes her mind, and mum's like "But the baby will probably die anyway blah blah blah....." What the???? I'm sorry but I pray that they change their minds and they find that the baby is either fine or the problems that they have aren't as bad as they seem. How do they know for sure anyway with a 11 week scan?? (she was 11 weeks at the time of scan)...and I can't believe my sister is considering this!!!
Not only that but I can't speak to her myself because she's all the way over in Scotland away from her family and friends who can support her. So all I got is my mother's interpretation and opinion. And this is really something that I should talk to her about rather than write via email...she really needs to see sense here!!
Oh I'm so upset by all this...it's just so wrong!! I know I've said in another thread that I'm both pro-choice and pro-life...and God I hope she chooses correctly here! This will be my first blood niece or nephew...I've seen the scan pics and my heart just melted for this baby...I love it already and they want to kill it because it's less than perfect??? I just don't get my mother's mindset for defending it either. She is the most self-righteous person I know, sometimes I can't even stand being around her, she's so judgemental...where does she get off thinking that termination is the answer here???
How can people be such hypocrites!!!??

Termination of any pregancy in HIS eyes is murder. So pray that the cells of these infirmities of this unborn child will be removed and replaced with perfect cells, in Jesus' Name.
It is the heart of the mother speaking here and overriding right from wrong - all she is looking at is that her daughter will be suffering with a child that is not perfect. A very hard decision to bring your thinking in line when your child is concerned. At the moment they are not thinking about the baby.
We hear so many stories that people say the doctor says things will be wrong and when they are born, it is not so. But if it is, look at all the stories where God used people for His good.
This is a heartbreaking choice to make and she will not receive much support for bring the child into the world from people around her - abortion is looked on now as nothing but getting rid of some tissue.
God gave me these words in the middle of the night a few years ago - maybe it will help your mother and your sister and also you. These words have saved many babies.

Mum is thinking in her flesh as a mother. She has lost her perspective in this.
I have a Christian friend who was pregnant a couple years ago and told me that the tests revealed that the fetus had Down Syndrome. She said flatly that she was having an abortion. I was horrified and another friend and I went over to her place and laid hands on her abdomen and prayed for that child. I had a few conversations with her pleading with her to think again, that what she was planning was murder and that she was actually cursing her own child's life.
I prayed fervently for her and that child.
She had another set of scheduled tests and an appointment with a specialist---revelation! Normal fetus! She had the baby, which was originally determined to be the boy she desired, but the Lord, I think, saw fit to NOT give her her desire for a son and gave her another daughter. If she hadn't cursed her own child, I believe she would have had the son she wanted. I feel so badly still for that little toddler now, when I look at her, knowing that while she was in the womb, she was fighting for her life because her own mother was hostile to her--it breaks my heart. Imagine a child growing up having been cursed before her own birth! Ahh! But God Himself saw her and loved her!
All things are possible with God. To continually curse a child by saying that there will be all manner of problems and that it will "probably die" is just so very wrong and not the words that any mother should speak.
Speak words of life to your sister, Cassidy, and uphold that child and the mother in prayer. God is in control of this situation--if He is allowed to be.

I'm so sorry to here of your sad news. It must be heart wrenching to go through something like that. I am so grateful that I've never experienced this so I can only imagine the horror you must be feeling right now.
The decision you have to make is a hard one. But you know something? It doesn't have to be. You can rebuke that report. I know you believe that God heals...I know you still do. Deep inside I know you believe that where there is life there is hope. Well right now your little baby inside you is alive....he/she lives! And whatever reason he/she lives, DESPITE the problems he/she may have. They have come this far, and it must be for a reason.
19 weeks is when they do the morphology scan. And they do it at that time for a reason. It's because they can see things more clearly. Everything has finished forming and they have a more accurate idea of how things are going. I'm surprised that they are saying all this at an 11 week scan. Are they even going to offer you an amnioscentesis? Even so...many babies are born fine even after it's been found they'd be born with problems. Nevertheless, this is all beside the point...the baby lives and he/she has the right to live. They have a chance, and I pray that that is not taken away from them.
Oh Collette, I wish you were here, or I was there....I'd sit you down and pray with you and tell you that He answers prayer. I wish that I could hold your hands and look into your eyes and tell you that it doesn't have to be this way...and that God knows and loves this child and regardless what may happen, this child is wanted and is in God's hands. I wish to give you strength, that you can do this. That you can fight for this life...I know you can! I know you have it in you.
Anyway whatever you decide to do, I will support you as my sister. I love you.
