I used to go to a non-denominational (EVFree) church that put the plate at the front for protection, but that was always awkward to start talking with people after church, then walk in the opposite direction of the flow, to the front.
Churches do have to consider theft, or encouraging a temptation for theft. I agree that passing the plate is offensive, but it's also practical. More people would start coming to church if they knew a plate of money was sitting out.
a container in the rear of the church that you will pass by upon exiting or toss a dollar into.
That's a good solution! Or a locked dropbox into a church office.
There is also the aspect that a church is continually training people. When the offering is passed, people don't think of giving as something other people do.
In the Church of God, tithes are mailed to either the home office, or the congregation treasurer. Only a few times a year, on annual Holy Days, a plate is passed for special Holy Day offerings.

It doesn't appear on your profile, so I am not exactly sure where you are? I have a friend who goes to a Family Bible Church in Texas that does not pass the plate in their services. They have a box in the foyer where you can give.
The pastor is a man who believes in tithing and has always amazed me by the strength of his faith.
