That's a difficult question... I think we all have different stories which have spoken to us at various times in our lives. I have always found the story of David particularly encouraging.. he messed up in so many ways, and yet he is called 'a man after God's own heart'. You can read about him in the books of Samuel, starting at 1Samuel chapter 16.
Ask God to guide you as you read the bible, and you will soon find the parts that speak to you at the moment. And you will never stop finding new things
It might help to start by reading in a modern version like the message... the stories are easier to follow, and you can study anything that grabs your attention in other versions.
There's a great site called biblegateway where you can read the bible in a lot of different versions if you want to.
If you want to ask anything else, there are a lot of people here who can help you with their own experience.. but the most important thing to remember is that God has things He wants to say specifically to you, and if you read the bible and let Him speak to you through it, you will be amazed and the way He uses it.
God bless you.

Think of it from the perspective of having a good story for a child who wants to hear one. My twokids on any trip in the Jeep that is longer than 20 minutes wants me to turn the radio off and tell them a story. I grew up reading Stephen King and Dean Kootz so at first yall know what all my stories consisted of. Then about a year ago we really got into church (though I have been saved since 1997) and now my stories center around the Bible.

Hi Dab, here's a list to get started with some of the stories I love:
1) Esther - it's not only a GREAT short story in the Bible, it's one of the 66 books of the Bible. God is never mentioned in this book, but His presence is never more felt! It comes right before Job and Psalms, just FYI.
2) Creation - Genesis 1-2
3) The Fall - Genesis 3
4) Cain and Able - Genesis 4:1-16
5) The Flood - Genesis 6-9
6) The Tower of Babel - Genesis 11:1-9
7) Sodom & Gomorrah - Genesis 19
8) The Offering of Isaac - Genesis 22:1-19
9) The Stolen Blessing - Genesis 27
10) Jacob Wrestles With God/Becomes Israel - Genesis 32:24-32
11) Israel, Joseph & his brothers, Robe, Dreams, Egypt, Famine - Genesis 37 - 50
12) The Exodus (birth of Moses, the Burning Bush, the Plagues, Pharoah, The Red Sea divided) - Exodus 1-15:21
13) Manna - Exodus 16:1-7
14) Mt. Sinai & The Golden Calf - Exodus 19, 32
15) Israel Defeated (Ichbaod, Dagon, Golden Tumors & Mice, Milch Cows, the Ark of God) - 1 Samuel 4-6
16) Daniel (Visions, Dreams, Nebuchadnezzar, Lion's Den, Furnace, Finger of God) - this book of the Bible is LOADED with famous stories so I would recommend just reading it all!
This seems like a good start, yes? I'll post more later (haven't even touched on the NT yet).
New Testament stories are mostly in the Gospels and Acts. Y'might read Matthew, John and Acts to get a fairly broad overview of them.

Another idea, you might try a children's storybook Bible. Think of them as the Sunday School lessons you never had. My little son has received several as gifts. All of them have the Bible verses noted, so you can read the kiddy version and then look up the full story in a regular Bible. All the basic, most important stories, are in the storybook versions. As you read your regular Bible, you will find many others that aren't in the children's versions. The storybook Bibles aren't expensive, maybe $10 to $15.
It is all good... Reading the first time through... I would jump over the begets... the geneology reports...
One thing that is interesting about the geneology report is
Before Abraham.. it was listed as "the father of"... FATHER.. aporox. 2000 years worth of geneology
After Abraham til Christ it was listed as "the son of".. SON.. aprox 2000 years worth
And now since Pentecost... aproaching 2000 years worth.
That will become more interesting as you get into the meater subjects. But right now... just read and pray asking God to teach you.
