Second Holy of Holies

Questions about the second temple.

As we know, the Ark of the Covenant got carted off by the Babylonians when the first temple was destroyed. Then the temple got rebuilt 70 years after that by Zerubbabel. Then 500 years after that it had a makeover by Herod.

OK. here are my questions:
  1. If the Ark of the Covenant was no longer there, what objects or furniture were in the 2nd Holy of Holies?
  2. If the Ark of the Covenant was no longer there, did the High Priest still enter the 2nd Holy of Holies?
  3. If the High Priest did enter once a year (as per Leviticus 16:12-16) what did he actually do since the ark was not present?

When you say the ark of Covenant, do you mean the ark of God?

Can't help you there, but one of the history channels had a fascinating documentary on the search for the Ark of the Covenant. You might check their websites and see if you can find clips of the slow to answer your questions.
