I guess if I were to rephrase the question: Is a girl who openly believes in God a turn-off to a guy who is agnostic or an atheist? You talk and you really hit it off and then notice that she reads books about Biblical stuff like angels. As a highly educated atheist or agnostic, do you think less of her?
Again, there's no one answer to this. If she was preachy and tried to push her religion onto me, yes, it would be a turn off. But I would say that most people would react the same way.
But if she didn't, but just accepted me as I was, then I would not be turned off by her beliefs.

Yeah, being preachy is a turn-off even to me. Nobody likes to be preached to. I just was reading a book about angels in my spare moments and didn't even discuss it with him or anyone else. Someone else (another doctor) asked if it was fiction so apparently it was noticed and caused a stir among the "elite" doctors there - one of whom was the Australian I mentioned. Looking back, I think I became a joke among them because of it.

Honestly yeah it is, I get bored with being a pet project. I get bored hearing about XYZ is a miracle, I hate praise music, I hate being asked to read the awful apologetics of CS Lewis or worse, Ray Comfort.
I'm not a fan of abstinence either.

Interesting.... on many things I can agree...like some praise music really sucks, old fashioned and seems to be uninspired...(while some is meaningful and great). I'm not a fan of CS Lewis either. I'm not a typical Christian though. I love God more than all the churchy traditions that are inflicted on the people.
(I guess abstinence might be harder for guys than girls. I've learned, though, that once you are awakened to it by experience, it's difficult to be without it physiologically. It seems to become a need. I guess it's meant to be that way and we were meant to couple up and be married) But, I digress....
Anyway, I can see how a person can make themselves unattractive by harping on anything constantly, including churchy traditions and even God.
Well, sad to say that this thread explains a lot in an interaction I had several years ago with a guy (who was over here studying for a couple of years) from Australia whom I greatly respected and admired and really wanted to befriend.
Based on this thread, it appears that Australians are mainly secular and do not greatly respect and admire people of faith (which explains the gentleman's perplexing behavior towards me), even suggesting that Christianity is for the unintelligent.
This is painful information and breaks my heart (again).
Mine too, Jen. I spent two years in the Midwest recently and was wonderfully surprised by how much I heard about God in everyday life. I saw tons of churches on just about every street corner in every town. I heard christians speaking openly in supermarkets about God. My hubby would talk to any person he came across about God and they would talk back, whether they were believers or not. I was gobsmacked by the whole thing, because it's not done here. If you talk that openly about Christ here you are either snubbed, stared at, frowned upon, or outright persecuted. We are too secular and it's such a shame.
One of the biggest taboos here is talking about religion or politics at BBQ's. You call them cookouts. The BBQ is a huge way of life here as a social gathering but you must not speak about such things. It's a hardness of heart towards God that I did not find in the States.

Do you guys ever feel that our country is not that Christian?
Of we have a lot of church goers and people who badge themselves Christian.....
But day to day I'm swamped mainly by secular people.
There are more people who have 'footy' as their daily devotion than Christ.
I went to Catholic School and met very few who lived the life of a Christianity 24/7.
Is it our Country? or just the Western world?
I for one am proud to live in a nation where one's religion, or lack there of, is NOT used as a deciding factor in how we judge a person.
Also, re: Jen and Tenka's conversation, I'm a Christian, my partner is very much an athiest. It isn't a problem, because we don't let it be a problem. I'm sure if I constantly deluged my partner with attempts at conversion or proselytisation, she wouldn't remain my partner very long... but then, to do so would be a blatant breach of Christ's greatest commandment to us about how we are to deal with people, so I wouldn't do it anyway. My sincere hope and belief is that I am far more likely to awaken her spiritul sense by being a good example, and being loving, caring and supportive than I would by badgering her constantly and leaving Chick Tracts in the toilet.
