I think it would be accurate to say Australia is post-Christian. Christianity does not play the role in society it did say, 100 or even 50 years ago. The statistics seem to indicate that at least with mainline churches, less than 20% regularly attend church. While many sign the census as Christian, many no doubt do not practice, and we also have a large number of atheists and agnostics.

A lot of the modern churches and post-christian too!
I remember a while back when the tradition of saying the Lord's prayer in parliament was challenged Bob Brown, who favored a moments silence, said "The prayer is said every day and it's as if no one heard it, Five minutes later, they're vilifying each other across the floor."
But both Rudd and Turnbull as well as The Australian Christian lobby rejected any changes.
And for, this sums it up in a nutshell; what Christian tradition remains is there merely because of tradition's sake and because of a tolerant or apathetic society.
It's been a long time since Christianity was an uniting force in Australia, and you can only block Muslim schools for so long.
Well, sad to say that this thread explains a lot in an interaction I had several years ago with a guy (who was over here studying for a couple of years) from Australia whom I greatly respected and admired and really wanted to befriend.
Based on this thread, it appears that Australians are mainly secular and do not greatly respect and admire people of faith (which explains the gentleman's perplexing behavior towards me), even suggesting that Christianity is for the unintelligent.
This is painful information and breaks my heart (again).

Do you guys ever feel that our country is not that Christian?
Of we have a lot of church goers and people who badge themselves Christian.....
But day to day I'm swamped mainly by secular people.
There are more people who have 'footy' as their daily devotion than Christ.
I went to Catholic School and met very few who lived the life of a Christianity 24/7.
Is it our Country? or just the Western world?
I'm a bit concerned about trying to label an entire country as Christian. australia is a country that is meant to pride itself on its multiculturalism. We should be embracing people of all faiths (and unfaiths). I don't think we can label an entire country as Christian in the same way we can't label an entire town as "Holden drivers" instead of "Ford drivers".
LOL! So, maybe I'm overthinking this. Maybe guys are guys no matter where you go...I thought maybe there were different cultural expectations like maybe you expect women to be more sophisticated by the world's standards. I guess if I were to rephrase the question: Is a girl who openly believes in God a turn-off to a guy who is agnostic or an atheist? You talk and you really hit it off and then notice that she reads books about Biblical stuff like angels. As a highly educated atheist or agnostic, do you think less of her?
