Why do Catholics eat fish and no meat on Fridays during lent?
And I should ask my dad, who was Catholic growing up, but since I'm here...has this been a change? It seems like I remember that my dad growing up used to eat fish every Friday and not just during lent.
Thanks for indulging me! (And from the looks of your front page, it's been slow, so maybe a new thread is not such a bad thing? ) |

You are correct. Catholics did not eat meat on Fridays before the 1960's. Then everything went wild in the 1970's and that disciplinary rule passed. By the 1990's a compromise was reached to observe Fridays in Lent by eating fish then.
The orthodox reason? To honor Christ's death on a Friday.
The urban legend (perhaps correct)? That the fishermen in Italy lobbied the pope to guarantee themselves a market at least one day a week when they returned with their catch.

St.Raphael pray for us
O angel of God, my holy guardian, given to me from heaven, enlighten me this day, and save me from all evil. Instruct me in doing good deeds, and set me on the path of salvation. Amen. |

I'm sure the fish only Fridays helped the fisherman, but I bet it is indeed legend only.
Rhamiel, my dad's family did it through out the year, but I don't think they practice this any more. My dad is no longer Catholic. |

Is it? I didn't know that.
I work at a Catholic school. I'll have to check their menu and see what they're serving kids on Fridays outside of lent. Come to think of it, it seems I remember there being a lot of cheese pizza on Fridays. |

I don't know how (or if) she ever reconciled to my dad not raising us Catholic. Apparently she Baptised me herself when I was six weeks old because she didn't trust my church to do it. |
