| As the governess slipped her hand into his, Ethan noted how perfectly they fit together. Her hand was so delicate and soft, his so large and rough, they complimented one another. Though he did find himself wondering if perhaps his hand was too rough to her. Why would she care, Ethan? You're her colonel. It's expected.
Her question, however, gave him cause to hesitate. She had noticed the tone in his voice then. Nice, Ethan. He scolded himself. He needed to be better about that. It was difficult, watching from afar and not being able to express his feelings for her. Even though...he wasn't exactly sure what those feelings were. He just knew they were strong and they made his chest warm and his heart ache at the same time every time he looked into her eyes.
But now he needed to cover for that little misstep. He offered the governess a tiny smile and then gave a small shrug to stall, his mind racing. "I think, my lady..." He paused, looking down into her eyes, her hand still clasped gently in his. He softened his voice, "I think you have so much going on right now in your life. Training Jamie, trying to become queen, dealing with your sister's death..." He squeezed her hand gently in comfort. "I've never been married, but I know that marriages take time and energy and I know at the end of the day, with so much on your plate, you don't have much of that to spare, and I don't want to see you take on too much. I worry for you, my lady, that's all."
