When we make decisions for our meals and snacks, what are our priorities? Is it taste, texture, or nutrition? Some people like soft tacos while others prefer hard shell. Pizzas come with a wide variety of toppings and types of crust. Vanilla is the most popular flavor of ice cream, yet people line up at Baskin and Robbins because there are 31 flavors. Sour cream goes great with Mexican food, but not everyone orders an extra portion like me. A sweeping observation seems to indicate that the people of our nation eat more often for entertainment and pleasure than nutrition.
Pay closer attention; do food advertisements focus on nutrition or pleasure? Take a tour of a supermarket and compare the number and placement of products that are just recreational and not nutritional. The candy, ice cream, chips, cookies, frozen pizzas, and breakfast cereals comprise the largest and most prominent areas of our local market. I have also noticed that those companies are the most aggressive in advertising and offering specials and coupons. Are your eating priorities and habits falling prey to this pressure?
Should we put things in our mouth that give us short term satisfaction or should we eat for long term health and wellness? I am trying to retrain my mind to make better choices that will benefit my boys for the rest of my life and theirs too. Instead of using drugs to fight disease, let's use better nutritional food choices.
I can be honest that a lot of the food that I eat is based on taste instead of nutrition. But like most human beings I cannot eat something that tastes disgusting. Most of the healthy foods that I eat (apples, bananas, salad, berries, whole wheat bread, veggies) I really do not like the taste of. I would always prefer to eat a cheeseburger, a Texas roadhouse roll, chips, cake.
But I eat the more nutritional items because I know they are good for me and they benefit my health more than the sugary/fattening foods.

I eat because I love food My priorities are nutrition. I eat green smoothies to get those greens that I hate by themselves. It's hard to wean yourself off junk food--we are used to the taste of lots of salt, and lots of (fake) sugar in the form of the vile High Fructose Corn Syrup. It's cool to see how different cultures approach food and so interesting to see how our American diet shapes up and how we view food.
The above photos are from Hungry Planet. The book itself is great.
It's also thought about in evolutionary terms--in general we like sugar, because our bodies are programmed to like because it's high-caloric and in lean times, this was a good thing.

I haven't had fast food, ice cream, candy bars, or soda in almost two years.
Maybe vanity prompted this decision, I don’t really know. I want to try and look the best that my genetics will allow me. I do feel a lot better about myself.
I always wish i could follow the mantra "eat to live, dont live to eat" or "food is fuel not fun" becasue basically we have to eat to stay alive but we dont have to eat junk or huge amounts of food, we only really have to eat enough to keep our bodies going healthfully. But because most of us were raised to see food also as comforting not just sustaining its hard to look past that. Its hard to eat for health and not for pleasure especially when we are sad or stressed. I for the most part eat healthy food, but my problem is portion control. And even then I know there are even healthier things I could eat than the things I eat now. haha. I guess there is a medium ground but just imagine the great shape the world would be in if we could all convince ourselves that eating was like filling our car with gas, just what you need to keep moving.
I started off eating for nutrition not for pleasure, I started eating properly and working out cause I got bullied at school. Now I love to go to the gym and lift weights and I cant stand eating fatty, greasy food and don't really like the taste anymore. Thankfully I enjoy the taste of healthy food so now I can eat for nutrition and for pleasure.
Personally I think that eating badly and getting overweight is a similar problem as alcohol addiction or anything of that nature. It is an addiction to the reward chemicals that are released in your brain and the problem is that you get hooked on getting that feeling form the wrong sources. You can train yourself to get that enjoyment from exercise and good food. I'm not sure I can say that it is the same as over coming alcohol addiction or drug addiction because I've never experienced alcohol or drug addiction but it takes dedication.
We need food to live but the wrong food hurts your body, mind and relationships with other people.
If you can picture in your mind the many different chemicals that are the ingredients of the type of food such as fruit, vegetables or meat then your subconscious mind will decide to choose the foods for you. I eat daily on toasted sandwich white bread, 4 boiled eggs sprinkled with salt, pepper and mixed herbs containing oregano. I added curry with the herbs for extra flavour. I drink Schweppes Agrum softdrink mainly because of the pure water and also the addictive flavour helps expel toxins from the body. Fruit juice is too sugary and plain water is tasteless and sour. I don't refrigerate the softdrink because it tastes sweeter when it is cooled. So I add ice cubes flavoured with lemon juice to remove the sweetness from softdrink. Another secret is the lemon juice it acts as a disinfectant for viruses and harmful bacteria, and it also acts as a weight loss supplement to remove fat and toxins.
