and that Jesus was going to return within a few years, would you... have children? Go to college? Bother saving for retirement? Buy a house?
If you really believed in your heart that you were either going to be martyred, raptured, killed in some plague or whatever in the next 5-10 years, would you live differently? Yet, very few do, for better or for worse. It just tells me very few actually believe what they are saying will actually come to pass.
Why would a Christian live differently under any circumstance ?
A Christian is biblically defined as one who is IN CHRIST, or more importantly, has CHRIST IN THEM. They are SEALED with the Holy Spirit of promise until the Day of redemption. IOW, they are already SAVED eternally in Christ. They can have issues, although God sealed them and He is faithful to finish that good work which HE began in each and every one.
In your example, it's as if you believe that a building would need to be paid off before Christ comes for us... but where is that in scripture..?
As far as freedoms, who knows? People in America have been saying that the government has been taking away our freedom for years now, but I yet to see any real evidence of this myself.
In Christ,
Acts6:5

They replied,"You are the eschatological manifestation of the ground of our being, the ontological foundation of the context of our very selfhood revealed."
And Jesus replied, "Huh?"

IMO, your post is based on false assumptions.
I think it's just a harmless hypothetical question, not a potential debate topic.
Back to the original post - if that were going to happen, I'd want to spend all my time witnessing instead of applying for jobs or whatever. That's what's really important, after all.

For example, a Christian church I know just spent millions on a super-nice new building. It will take them decades to pay the building cost. Now, why would they do that if they thought they weren't going to be around very long?
Honestly believing that the Tribulation is going to start any moment, is not reason to not live life as if you have a lifetime to live.
Live as Jesus and His disciples lived. They did not strive after worldly gain because they were aware that this world is ending.
When the Day of the Lord/Day of Wrath begins, this "illusion of relative peace and prosperity" is over. It's not going to matter how much is in your bank account or whether you have a Master's degree. The only thing that matters in this life (40 years in the wilderness) is whether or not you love God with all your heart and follow Him.
So, live your life here doing what God has called and enabled you to do, avoiding traps of sin, greed, and selfish ambition, knowing that this world is ending and is only preparation for the next life, which is eternal...where we will be rewarded for what we learned in this life.
If God has called you to be a doctor, go and be a doctor. But don't go and be a doctor for the earthly rewards. Don't let anyone make you feel like you haven't achieved enough or are not good enough. God is the only One who decides that.

Hockey Fan, the minute Christ ascended into heaven, we were in the end times... but just because we are in the end times, does not mean we should just give up...
