My own pastor is challenged in this area. My spouse says that it's the hotels, hamburgers and fast food on the preaching circuit.
I think having a head full of end-times scenarios means that reducing consumption, personally and environmentally is not a priority.
Also - why do so many people not like the God Channel? I'm caught in the middle of people who won't talk to each other because of it. |

I've seen the old 'why should I care about [global warming/conservation/declining health/world hunger/etc.], since we're just going to get Raptured in a couple of years anyway' mindset more than just a few times in my years around here, not to mention in some of the overtly televangelist circles. Whatever happened to the commandment we were given to be stewards? And that's a Scriptural commandment.
But the rampant consumerism, self-glorification, and, dare I say it, gluttony, of the modern church sickens me in a way few things can manage to do. The song "Christian America" by Dead Artist Syndrome kind of illustrates the point sarcastically (man, is that song vitriolic). The lyrics can actually be seen here: http://www.newreleasetuesday.com/lyr...yrics_id=14831

A few of the preachers on those are fat, but I wouldn't say a majority. But a definite majority of them are Word of Faith, and there are only a few WoF preachers that I can take. About the only WoFer I really like is Joseph Prince, out of Singapore, who pounds on grace rather than the 'prosperity gospel' or other WoF distinctives. It doesn't hurt that he's really cute too.

No guilt of life, no fear of death This is the power of Christ in me
From life’s first cry to final breath
Jesus commands my destiny
No power of hell, no scheme of man
Can ever pluck me from His hand
‘Til He returns or calls me home
Here in the power of Christ I’ll stand |

And a lot of people tend to not like God TV, TBN, etc. because of the Word of Faith theology. And the general cheesiness of a lot of "Christian" programming is too much for some (like me) to handle.

I can also say that when you have a lifestyle involving lots of travel, fatter foods are by FAR more available than healthier ones. And if your traveling job involves non-corporate kinds of interactions, there is a greater likelihood that meals are being offered...and people like to offer rich foods as opposed to healthier meals. Think of the outcry if these ministers brought personal cooks and trainers with them to keep svelte - it kinda seems like they are "dam*ed if they do and dam*ed if they don't". Don't get me wrong - I completely understand the criticism but there are always 2 sides (and several edges) for every situation and story out there.

Sometimes she corrects things that we dont think need to be corrected. I think we get that way in the kingdom. We see our brothers and sisters doing stuff that we know is wrong, and we just assume that the Father has missed it because we dont see Him handling it. Most weight issues are DEEP heart issues. God is dealing with the heart, He sees it. Trust in Him, He's a Good Papa. :~) |

I struggle with this sin myself and am disappointed in the cavalier attitude towards it by the church. It defiles God's temple and wastes his resources that could be better used somewhere else. To illustrate this point, I offer a personal anecdote:
At a previous church we had a visiting evangelist and music minister. The music minister was "larger than life" as well.
We had a spaghetti luncheon and I got a plate with a little bit of spaghetti, some salad and a piece of garlic bread. I sat with the evangelist and the music director. The evangelist asked why I didn't have more food, since there was so much there. I explained to him that my doctor had told me I needed to lose weight for health reasons, so I was cutting back on my caloric intake.
His response?
"If my doctor told me that, I'd get a new doctor," he said.
Now I know he was trying to make a joke, but if you think about it, this just isn't an appropriate response for a shepherd of God's flock to make.
As far as Christian TV is concerned, I like watching Fr. Corapi on EWTN. He's pretty skinny | | | | Thread Tools | | | | Display Modes | Linear Mode | | | |
