Kingdom Hearts: Dual Trinity

At first, he thought he was falling through an endless infinity of nothingness...

You have chosen me.

A voice suddenly spoke to him.It was not a threatening; melancholy voice but a sweet; tender voice that made him feel warm and safe. But it still struck some fear in his heart. He looked around for the source of the voice, but all he could see was black.

I have chosen you.

And then, as if from in a dream, a platform appeared underneath hi, and he landed lightly. Too lightly. It was almost as if he had been standing on it the whole time and not realized it. He looked around.

The platform was circular,; lit by a light from an unknown source, on its smooth glass surface was an image of a man in clothing similar to his own; holding what looked like a whip, a sword hung at his side; beside the man stood a beautiful brown-haired girl. He studied the image. The two didn’t look familiar.

Let it have form, and it shall grant you strength.

He spun around, looking in every direction for the source of that voice. But all that met his eyes were three objects suspended above three pedestals in beams of light. One a sword, another was a shield, and the last was a mage’s staff. He looked at them, confused.

“Who’s there?” he called out.

Do not be afraid. You must choose wisely.

He looked at the weapons again, thinking. Was he about to be challenged to a duel? Or maybe a two on one? He shuddered slightly at the thought,, he didn’t even know how to wield a weapon very well. Yet, if he was about to be challenged, which would he want to wield?

He reached out slowly and grasped the handle of the sword.

Then, something strange happened. Something was growing inside him. At first, he thought it was pain, because it made him fall to his knees and weep. And then, he realized it was pleasure. Pleasure laced with love and joy; and still, it intensified. He felt like rolling around like a child, laughing hysterically. But he only laughed, and the void laughed with him. And suddenly, it stopped.

You have received the power of the warrior. You shall burn with the fire of life, abounding in courage and strength. My voice will cry out to you for aid, and you shall come forth as a mighty wind, bringing with you the wrath of the heavens.

The pedestal that had once held the sword dissolved into the air. Only two remained over which floated the staff and shield.

Choose.

He walked over to the shield, emblazoned with a heart on its face. He reached out and touched it. It disappeared; as did the pedestal. He gasped as pain shot through his fingers and swarmed his body. He felt like he was being ripped from the inside out, stabbed with a thousand needles, and chewed up by a dozen sets of teeth. He screamed as the pain tore at him; and, like before, the void howled with him.. It lasted for what seemed like an eternity, then abruptly stopped.

He found himself on his back, staring up into the void; gulping air.

You have sacrificed the power of the guardian. In your own self alone you will find me. The way of mediation and connection shall not be yours to take.

He got to his feet, wiping the sweat from his forehead. He glanced around again. Still no sign of anyone.

“Where are you?” he called out.

As if in answer, the glass disc disappeared from underneath him and he was again floating in the void.

Another platform appeared, this time with two dark; red eyed creatures. He looked at them as they advanced on him. He took a step back, gripping his sword tighter.

“Hey, what –“

Fight.

The dark creatures lunged at him, and he made his move. His newfound weapon sliced through the air, his movements were graceful as if he had always known how to wield a weapon like this. He stabbed and slashed at the creatures and they soon vanished in a swirl of black smoke.

He straightened, looking at the sparkling silver blade in awe. “Whoa! How’d I do this?”

My light shines within you. Keep it strong.

The platform vanished and another appeared. This one designed with even more pictures worked into it’s smooth glass surface. He stared at it; still listening to the voice.

We have chosen. And at the end of this journey, we will choose…once again.

She opened her eyes. And turned slowly, searching. Where was she? For that matter, who was she?

You have chosen me.

Darkness stretched before her, infinite and silent. There was nothing to be seen, nor heard, nor thought of. All was still, void. Then the beating of her heart came to awareness, and the empty void beat with it. The warmth radiated from her body, and the void was warm.

I have chosen you.

“Wh-who are you?” she called out wonderingly. She tried to remember where she had come from, what her life was like. But no recollection came. She was just… her. And nothing existed for her but the void.

In response, she became suddenly aware that she stood on a solid surface, a disc of colored glass some forty feet in diameter. The glass shone with a light from an unseen source, in every hue and color of the rainbow. There could be seen in the colors a pattern, no, many patterns. A man in black. A tall, dark-haired youth carrying a massive sword on his back. A castle, sharp and gray against a magnificent sunrise. A knife dripping with blood.

What you give form to is what you become

She wanted to concentrate on the patterns in the glass beneath her, but her attention moved seemingly of its own accord. She watched instead as three pedestals flashed into existence around her, forming a triangle at the center of the circle.

Choose well.

It seemed so natural. She stepped to one of the pedestals and touched the object on it, a shield with the symbol of a heart lacquered on its face. It disintegrated, and life surged through her being, joy and love and power. The void seemed to shine, and she laughed, the sound reflected back to her. The ecstasy grew – she trembled, and then screamed as the tide overwhelmed her, burning and consuming, and she longed to fling herself from the disc into oblivion’s embrace. Still the sensation magnified . . . She felt she must burst. And then suddenly she realized – there was only peace.

You have received the power of the guardian. You shall see me in the guise of others, and their joy and suffering shall be yours. You shall stand between me and the adversary as my chosen bulwark, and you shall neither bend nor give way.

The pedestal on which the shield had lain vanished. Now there were two. Both held objects as well, a sword and a rod of wood.

Choose.

She grasped the rod. And cried out in agony, her knees buckling. Pain tore through her as if some ethereal hand had reached in and ripped something vital from her soul. The void howled, and a tremor rippled through its eternal depths. In her hand, the rod splintered into a thousand tiny flickers of light, which winked out one by one in rapid succession. Anguish dwindled into an ache and then a memory, finally fading altogether into calm. She sagged, breathless, hugging herself tightly.

You have sacrificed the power of the mystic. It shall be by the work of your hands that you will know me. The way of the scholar and the mage shall not be yours to take.

“Please . . . Who are you?” She straightened and dropped her arms to her sides. Peering into the emptiness, she sought some sign, any trace of where the words came from. “Why don’t I remember who I am? Hello? Please -- don’t leave me . . . ”

The pedestals were gone. Silence reigned. And then three dark beings materialized in place of the pedestals. They reached for her with long talons, their eyes infernal pits of scarlet.

Now fight. You have my authority.

She had no time. They were upon her, and reflex kicked in. Catching one by the wrist, she flung it against its companion and attacked the third, kicks and strikes landing at precise points on its toadlike body. It imploded in a cloud of smoke, the scent of sulfur stinging her nostrils.. The other two, having tumbled some distance across the gleaming platform, now righted themselves and came at her in a wild charge. She kept moving, never staying in one place, shifting stance continually. Clumsy and uncoordinated as the things were, they were no match for her. Moments after the battle began, it was done, twin puffs of smoke marking their passing.

My light shines within you. Keep it bright.

She listened. This must be important. There had to be a reason for all this.

We have chosen.

The disc faded and once more she stood in the void.

And at the end of this journey, we will choose . . . once again.

He looked up from the image of a golden haired man with turquoise eyes. Across the platform stood a woman. Her eyes a pale blue color; her jet black hair fell in ringlets past her shoulders. She was pretty. He could say that much. But he wasn't thinking about that at the moment.

He called out to her. "Who're you?"

Another disc of glass appeared beneath her feet. The patterns in this one were different. A blond-haired man with a single black wing sprouting from his back. A dragon spouting a cloud of flame. A little dog whose ears drooped nearly to its feet. There were more, but she was not alone this time. Someone stood across from her.

Alarmed, she crouched, unsure whether to shrink back or prepare to fight. It was a man. Younger than her, but still a man. No . . . barely a man. As his eyes swept up to meet hers, she tensed in readiness.

"Who're you?" he asked.

She stared at him. Who was she? She didn't know. Searching deep within herself, she grasped for something, anything to identify herself by. And then it was there. Her name. She had a name. The realization shook her. Did that mean she had more to her, beyond this empty darkness?

Opening her mouth, she started to tell him, then stopped. How did she know he could be trusted? He was male, and they were alone. Instead she changed course. "I don't know. Who are you?"

He looked at her in her crouch; her knees bent slightly, her eyes watching him warily. She looked ready to pounce on him at any moment. It was obvious enough by the way she stood watching his every move, she didn't trust him. That was fine with him. He didn't know if he trusted her either.

A moment passed in which there was silence. The woman seemed to be pondering his question. Was it really that hard to answer? Or maybe she didn't know who she was? He thought he saw a slight tremor run through her body, then she opened her mouth as if to answer, but stopped short. What was it she was going to say? Perhaps she had been about to tell him who she was but thought better of it. She really didn'r trust him, did she?

And then she finally spoke. "I don't know. Who are you?"

So, she didn't know who she was? That was strange. She had to know who she was, right? Maybe just a name? But then again, he didn't know who he wasz either.

"Good question. Uh..." he trailed off, fiddling with the pendant around his neck. Who am I? he wondered, thinking hard, trying to remember himself; who he was, where he'd come from, how he got here, everything. But he rememered nothing. Nothing at all, except...

He suddenly remembered, with staggering accuracy, that he knew his name. He knew his name as if he had known it all along. He laughed to himself and stopped fiddling with his necklace.

"Aylus Kade." he said. He didn't care if the woman knew his name. There was nowhere either of them could go and seemingly no other person to tell. EAven if there was, he didn't care. Maybe she knew something about him? "Where are we?"

She relaxed just a little. His name was Aylus Kade. He didn’t seem about to attack her, or take advantage of her. He seemed relaxed and not at all interested in her as a woman. But then, how could she be sure? She pondered, even as her knees straightened into a more normal stance.

“I’m Kaima,” she ventured cautiously. Kaima Punyal. As she thought the name, she felt stronger. It meant she had an identity somewhere, even if she couldn’t remember where. “I don’t know where we are. I thought . . . maybe you did.”

She took note of the object he was playing with, a gold figurine which hung around his neck. It looked like a strange blend of two miniature creatures; a lion and an eagle. It must mean something, she thought, and wondered if she should ask. It might offend him if she did, and then again it might be important enough to him that he might be offended if she didn’t. She waited, hoping to learn more about this stranger.

Kaima. The name didn't sound familiar to him. In fact, he wasn't sure if he'd ever heard that name before. It was new to him. Everything was new to him.

The woman, whom he knew as Kaima, had straightened up from her crouch and relaxed a bit. That was good. It meant she had at least gained some confidence that he wasn't about to impale her on his new sword; unless she attacked him first, which he found unlikely, considering the fact that she was being wary of him.

Aylus had turned his attention to the images on the platform, searching for signs of recognition in this one or that one. And after a moment of silence, he looked up and saw Kaima stazring at him. "Um...what?" he asked, feeling slightly uncomfortable. "Is it my handsomeness, or is there something you want to say?"

Kaima ducked her head and pretended to be studying the figures in the platform. So brightly colored, and glowing. Such a contrast to the void in which it floated. Actually, the movement was meant to let her hair hang down over her face, hiding the heat rising in her cheeks. Handsomeness? She had been wondering how not to offend him! Now if he came any closer . . .

“Nothing,” she answered him inn a neutral tone, still pretending to scan the images. “I just . . . wonder why we are here.” She could think of nothing else to say. Her nck prickled, and she raised her head to look back at him, eyes narrowed. The void was stirring. Was he somehow the cause?

For a moment, he stared at her as she bowed her head, to examine pictures at her feet, her hair falling around her face, partially hiding it. Shy. Aylus thought. Or maybe she was embarassed by what he'd just said. Still, it seemed to amuse him a little. He wasn't sure why. But he had a feeling this girl would make an interesting acquaintance.

Just as he wa about to go back to looking at the artwork on the platform, Kaima lifted her head and he stopped, staring back. There was a strange look on her face, her eyes were fixed on him, almost accusingly.

But then something occurred to him. He sensed something was wrong. The infinty that had been still now seemed to stir. e tightened his grip on the sword in his right hand, still staring ack at Kaima. If she was the one disturbing the infinity, he would soon find out. Until then, he would wait.

She saw him return her stare and grip his weapon. That must mean he was up to something. “What – “ she began, intending to ask why he was looking at her like that. She never got the sentence out.

They have come. You must return now. Hurry!

The voice. She whirled around, but all that met her eyes was the void, again. “What are you? Why . . . What’s wrong?”

Follow the way, and you shall find your answer. Until you find me again.

The infinity shook with a force that threw Kaima to the platform. She scrabbled for purchase as tremors ran one after another through the colossal emptiness. Barely gaining her feet, she looked around wildly. “A-Aylus?”

But she didn’t see Aylus. She saw . . . things. Tall and sinuous, almost as if they had no bones, the things seemed to appear out of nowhere on the quaking platform. She could see nothing of them; they wore white suits that covered them from head to toe. And they had no eyes.

The leader turned its eyeless gaze on Kaima. “We have found them,” it announced. “Seize her first.”

Kaima didn’t wait. A path appeared suddenly, spiraling up into the void, and she ran up it full tilt. The things gave chase, even as everything continued to shake.
