It seems like every time I interact with my parents and their friends from the baptist church they attend, I get an idea for a new thread...
They were having a conversation about how the bible says that women should not be leaders of men. They expounded upon the situation by saying the following...
Women should not be allowed to lead a church or any group within a church other than a womens bible study.
Women should not speak up during church services.
Women should not be allowed to be supervisors or managers in a place of employment.
Women should never have the final say at home when the husband is present.
They went one to explain to me that a violation of any of the things listed above is not only blatant disregard for God's natural order, but is a shame and disgrace to the men who reported to a female leader (in any capacity)
They provided the verses to support it and everything checked out so the Bible does in fact teach this...
I don't believe the bible, but for those who do, do you think these teaching should be taken literally in this modern day in age?
Do you feel these teachings are ethical??

Is the Bible sexist? Absolutely. I had a hard time accepting it when I was a believer, but there it was. Trying to live according to sexist scripture was one of the things that kept me in a bad marriage for far longer than was healthy.
I recently started another read-through of the Bible again. The male bias is undeniable. Doesn't mean people don't somehow look at it as being gender-equal, but I honestly don't know how they do it. I've even interacted with believers who claim that the Bible is a radical feminist document because some NT verses order Christian men to treat Christian women better than men generally treated women 2000 years ago. Well, "better" is good, but it isn't "equal" by a long shot - a pampered slave is still a slave.
But one's mileage may vary, and whaddoIknow.

I'm an ex-Christian, so I can offer only what I used to think and believe, which is of course no longer current... don't know how much that's worth, really.
At the time I was a Born-Again. I did indeed believe that the Bible was divinely inspired and carried the weight of divine authority behind it. Consequently to adopt some of it and reject the rest didn't seem consistent to me: if it was all the word of God, then none of it should be ignored or rejected. Hence my struggles to take the unpleasant with the uplifting.
That's kind of a simplification, but sums up my mindset at the time anyway.

I know if something like this came out about a writing that I thought was the perfect word of God, I'd be doing everything in my power to defend it.
Bible supporters around here tend to stay away from issues that put them or their their religion in a bad light. Most find it more prudent and comfortable to ignore things like this.

That's because, thank jeebus, all the bible-supporters are banned for the most part from using this site.
I have been encouraging my friends at IIDB to start posting here because the only people running this site are free-thinkers, just like us. Talk about a glorious irony!

It can't be that, because at one time there would be a great number of xian posters posting in the name of gawd or jeebus or whomever in high numbers, then just a month later, not a trace of them. Why would people who have such passion for their god post many times, then stop posting altogether?
I believe these posters were banned by the moderators just because the person was xian and the moderators are (clearly) not. The moderators here seem to be eliminating enemies, and the enemy is the xian bigot and the intolerant fundie. In effect, the moderators are 'de-christianizing' this forum, thank the FSM.
Does anyone else have a different perspective on the issue?
