"The Pope is of so great authority and power, that he is able to modify, declare, or interpret even divine laws." I know this is what is believed, the evidence is in indulgences for one thing. Truly this is a proclamation that I would be scared of if I were raising my family in the Roman church. Is the above statement which was taken from an 18th century Catholic encyclopedia troublesome to those currently bound by the Roman system?

Did you believe indulgences or doing specific prayers or making journeys (forget what they are called) to special places stated by popes affected either your eternal or temporal punishments?
If the answer is yes then you in fact did believe such a ridiculous statement
