Creation & EvolutionForum for the discussion of this important topic. This forum is open to non-believers. There is a Christians-only forum in the Christians-only section too.
Faith is believing in something without any physical evidence to support that belief. Jesus as The Christ is one example. Another would be belief in the spirits (Kami) of one's ancestors or in various aspects of the natural world as in Shintoism. Belief in an afterlife or in reincarnation are other popular themes in the more popular religions.
Do you think there is a difference between faith and superstition?
Seems like every faith thinks the others' are superstition.
Then there are superstitions not really linked to any particular religion.
Those are also belief with no evidence.... tho of course one always get anecdotal evidence about what will happen "if".
I have a friend from one of the poor SE Asian countries. She is here now, got her BA, but talking with her, I'd hear her say things that were beliefs from her home country. Interesting thing tho, if I'd show how it didnt make sense, pretty soon she'd say "oh that is a superstition, I dont believe it now". Better still, pretty soon she was out looking for them herself, and when one came up she'd realize it for what it is and just drop it. Cool!
Not many seem able to do that. What I find really weird is people who are proud of their superstitions.
maybe its supposed to be a mystery kind of like "god is love"
some of them like to think of it that way. They're the ones that just shake their heads at you and say "oh, you just don't understand. If you had faith you'd deel different." They seem to connect faith with the magical mystical magnificent mad mad mad mad madam Mim (sorry, couldn't resist) warm an fuzzy feeleings they get from their belief. If only those poor unbelievers could feel the POWER of FAITH they would understand! Their hearts would be opened! Unfortunately they don't understand the feelings themselves as naturally occuring from of community and friendship, so they'll never see why we reject faith.

Danth's Law: "If you have to insist that you've won an internet argument, you've probably lost badly."
Its a reference to a Disney character and the song she sings. She was a wizard... I think that's really the only reason it came up. Sigh. Thusly meanders my mind.

its ok! i knew of mad madam min i used to get called that
I have brought this thread back, because a famous cretionist here has re-posted the idea that atheists have more faith than he does. Perhaps he would like to address the O.P. again.
