Yeah, British Columbia is very nice and has a lot of variety from large cities like Vancouver to medium-sized towns like Kelowna and Kamloops, which are inland and near lakes and mountains to rural villages where there might only be 1 or 2 doctors within 100 km. If you prefer the ocean to lakes, there is Vancouver Island the capital city of Victoria.
Also, if you are an English speaker, you will feel much more at home than in Quebec, where French is the primary language.
Calgary is only a short drive to Banff
Edmonton is a short drive to Jasper
Vancover is a short drive to Whistler.. and the 2010 Olympic Winter Games

Yeah, British Columbia looks pretty close to the dream- saw some amazing scenery on the interweb. What are winters there generally like? I've heard rumours of -40oC, which sounds pretty extreme from where I'm sitting- coldest it tends to get here is around -10, if that.
On the other hand, you actually get decent snow somewhat reliably, so I suppose there are pros and cons!
Okanagan Valley from Kelowna down is warm enough to keep the fruit trees from freezing and still close enough to ski resorts.

You want to look at (and some of this has been said before):
1. Squamish, BC (upsides: ocean, mountains, semi-rural, 40 minutes from Whistler, one hour from Vancouver. Downside: cost)
2. Parksville, BC (upsides: ocean, mountains, semi-rural, 20 minutes from Nanaimo, 2 hours from Victoria, 2 or 2.5 hours (including ferry) to Vancouver, a couple hours from Mt. Washington or you can take the ferry to the Mainland and get to Whistler. Downside: From my perspective, I don't know that the town has much to offer to a young person... but you'd have to check it out for yourself.
3. Courtney, BC (see Parksville... but further from the cities of Nanaimo, Victoria, and Vancouver.... but SUPER close to Mt. Washington.)
4. Okanagan, BC (check it out from Penticton up to Vernon.... It offers everything but is further from a big city... and you have to give up the ocean for a great lake.)
I think that you should look at Squamish first.
4. Okanagan.
