I wonder how the sayings of the Hindu holy books are used? as another poster asked, is it in the Bible or added to the comentary?
wow a lot of fuss over a picture of Jesus, Mary and Joseph as Indians? the Italians make them look Italian, the Germans make them look German, the Mexicans make them look Mexican (Our Lady of Guadalupe). It is done becuase people like Jesus to look like them.
Remember, India was "colonized" by the British, we have to tell them that Christianity is not the "white mans" religion but is for everyone.
Also with the gospel message being for everyone, it is ok to symbolicly depict Jesus as being whatever ethnicity the people in the area are, the point is not to say Jesus Christ was not Jewish, but to show that God is the God of all peoples
coptic(egyptian) icon of Christ

Reason: adding info
The notes even quote Hindu scriptures, such as the Ramayana and Mahabharata epics, to help to explain Christianity to prospective converts. “We wanted to show the parallels between the themes in the Bible and in Indian religions,” Father Tony Charanghat, a spokesman for the Archbishop, said. “We’ve put the sacred text in a local context.”
When Jesus tells disciples to turn the other cheek, the notes compare this to Gandhi’s creed of non-violence.

from what I have seen it is just in the notes
I am glad to see the Catholic Church in India is reaching out to Indains and not saying that they have to become "westernized" to become Christian. People do not have to turn their back on their culture to follow Christ.

It is not about a picture. We're talking about perverting the word of God to fool Indians into thinking that Jesus is not the Messiah promised to Israel, does not meet the Messianic prophecies, was promised first to the Jews. This is what I find so frustrating about ChristianForums. People here are so unbelievably ignorant of elementary of Christian doctrine that they don't understand that Jesus must be Jewish or else He is not the Messiah and is not the Savior.
By this logic it is changing the Bible to draw Jesus as a white man because it might convince someone that Jesus wasn't Jewish.
I agree. But just because somebody else took it upon themselves to pervert God's word doesn't mean that it's OK for others to do it.
The article says nothing about saying Jesus was Indian, it just has a picture of him as an Indian Peasant.
It isn't simply a matter of showing a picture. The text of this perversion of the Bible attempts to rewrite the historical account to portray Christ as an Indian.

First of all, they do have to turn their back on their culture because their culture is pagan.
Second, the Catholic church tells them that they have to become Catholic to be Christians.
Remember, evangelism to a Catholic means recruiting people for Catholicism.

and evangelism to Protestants means recruiting people for Protestantism.
the cultures of Europe were pagan at one time too, but they were christianized, I believe the same can happen in India, they would have to get rid of a lot of pagan ideas and rituals, but I think there can be (or even is right now) a Christian Indian culture

I disagree. We believe that evangelism is sharing the Gospel with the lost so that they will repent and put their faith in Christ.
Catholic "evangelism" is not Biblical evangelism because it only seeks to make them Catholic. I would encourage you to go to Catholic.com sometime and look at their "evangelization" forum sometime. There are no threads there about sharing the Gospel with the lost. It's all about "how do I get my loved one to become Catholic".

I went to the website like you recomended, most of it was as you said, there were also lot of questions also about how to teach children the faith.
Since Catholics believe the Catholic Church has preserved the Gospel and is free from error it makes sense that we would want people to become Catholic once they come to except Jesus as Lord. I was being a little harsh when I said that evangelism to Protestants means recruting people for Protestantism, but it makes sense whe Catholics share the Gospel we share a Catholic understanding of the Gospel and when Protestants share the Gospel they share a Protestant understanding of the Gospel. I never really liked CatholicAnswers or thier forum very much, OBOB suits me just fine lol.
